Practical tips for visiting Menton in 1 day
Getting around on foot, by car, by public transport…
Menton is a town on a human scale that we recommend you discover on foot for a day. Most of the sites of interest (the old town, the port, the beaches, the market and the museums) are within a short distance of each other. Strolling through the colorful alleyways is part of the experience.

For longer journeys, particularly to the higher gardens or to the east of the city, public transport is a good alternative. The bus network makes it easy to reach outlying districts without having to use the car. A free electric shuttle also runs daily. Read more about his careerhere.

Getting to Menton by car can be tricky. Traffic jams are frequent, particularly during the summer season, especially as the narrow streets of Menton’s old town are largely pedestrianized. You may prefer to rent a bike to explore the city. Self-service electric bicycles are available. Find out more about the service here.
The weather in Menton
This is obviously the major asset of Menton and the entire Côte d’Azur! Summer temperatures generally oscillate between 25°C and 30°C, while winters remain mild with average temperatures between 10°C and 15°C.

Menton is known for its abundant sunshine, with over 300 days of sunshine a year. A mild climate that favors the cultivation of citrus fruits, especially the famous Menton lemons! We recommend spring, autumn and even winter to visit the city and its surroundings.
The crowds in Menton
Traffic levels vary according to season and event. In July and August, Menton attracts a large number of visitors (over 70,000 by summer 2022), and traffic can be very heavy, especially as access routes to the city center are limited. If you can, we advise you to avoid this highlight of the year, or take advantage of the services provided by the town (bus, free shuttle, electric bike). Finally, getting around on foot is what best suits the steep streets of the old town. Find out more here.

Start the day in Menton’s old town, where the Italian influence is immediately apparent. The colorful facades, shutters, narrow streets and small squares are reminiscent of Ligurian villages.

Day 1 – 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.: Discover the churches of the old town
Start the day with a visit to Menton’s old town, the historic heart of the city with its steep streets and colorful facades. Take a leisurely stroll through this charming maze, punctuated by small squares and typical staircases.

Don’t miss the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel, one of the city’s most emblematic monuments, whose forecourt already offers superb sea views. Take time to admire its Baroque architecture and solemn atmosphere.

Next door, the Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs (White Penitents Chapel) is just as remarkable. Richly decorated, it bears witness to the importance of religious brotherhoods in Menton’s history, and is the perfect complement to a visit to the old town’s religious heritage.

Then continue your stroll through the surrounding alleyways, where every nook and cranny reveals a new architectural detail or view of the Mediterranean.
Day 1 – 11:30am – 1pm: climb to the Old Castle Cemetery
Continue your discovery by climbing up to the Old Castle Cemetery, perched high above the old town. Access is via a sloping path and a few steps, but the effort is amply rewarded.

This unusual site, steeped in history, offers one of the finest panoramic views of Menton. From the cemetery, the view opens out onto the colorful roofs of the old town, the port, the bay and the Mediterranean as far as the eye can see. The atmosphere is calm and contemplative, ideal for taking a break after visiting the historic center.

Take the time to stroll between the ancient tombs, admire the sculptures and enjoy the exceptional view, before heading back down to the town center for the rest of the day.
Day 1 – 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm: Lunch on the go at La Maison Samaran
Then head back down to the center for a quick, tasty lunch at La Maison Samaran. A south-western address in the heart of Menton, where you can eat local produce on the go at a reasonable price.

Day 1 – 2:30 – 4pm: join the Musée Jean Cocteau
Following a flood, the Musée Jean Cocteau’s contemporary building is currently closed. However, you can still visit the Bastion Jean Cocteau, located at the entrance to the Old Port, which makes for a nice cultural stopover during the day.

Housed in a former 17thᵉ century fortification, the Bastion is home to a selection of works by Jean Cocteau, donated to the town of Menton by the artist himself. Drawings, sketches and graphic creations are presented in an intimate setting, steeped in history and open to the sea.

The visit is shorter than that of the main museum, but still very interesting for understanding the deep connection between Jean Cocteau and Menton. It also offers lovely views of the harbor, making it a pleasant stopover and well-suited to a day’s itinerary. More info on the official website here.
