The best hotels in Monaco: our 5 favorites
If you don’t want to read the whole list of hotels and why we love them, here’s our quick answer with our favorites in every corner of Monaco, and why you’ll have a wonderful stay here!
Best resort hotel: Monte-Carlo Bay Hôtel & Resort
We highly recommend this 4-star hotel, which was our favourite resort hotel, but not only! In fact, it’s our favorite hotel in the Principality, all types included. We were enchanted by its exceptional lagoon! It’s an outdoor pool surmounted by bridges, with various places to have a drink, or simply relax in the sun with your feet in the water, overlooking the sea. This place was incredible!

Best 5-star palace: Hôtel Hermitage
Monaco is associated with luxury, not least because of its 3 5-star palaces, which are among the most luxurious establishments in the world. They are concentrated in the central Monte-Carlo area. Our favorite is the Hôtel Hermitage, with its Belle Époque style, housed in a huge listed palace with an elegant Eiffel dome. If you like chic surroundings, this is the hotel for you!
See photos, prices and availability.
Best boutique hotel: Hôtel Miramar
In terms of originality, this small boutique hotel is our favorite. We loved its marine-inspired decor, such as the hallway floor, which gave us the impression of walking on sand! We thought it was smart that the room configuration was modular, and were won over by the quality of service and the rooftop.
See photos, prices and availability.
Best hotel with a view: Port Palace
The Port Palace is a 4-star hotel located in Port-Hercule. We loved its chic restaurant on the 6th floor, with terrace. It is surrounded by bay windows. Even the ceiling is made of glass and looks out onto the outside! We had breakfast there and found the view of the port sublime, although unfortunately it was raining.
See photos, prices and availability.
Best hotel in Fontvieille: Colombus Hôtel
The Colombus Hotel is a 3-star establishment, but includes many of the amenities of a higher-ranked hotel (outdoor pool, gym, restaurant…). We particularly liked its contemporary, elegant decor, as well as its surroundings. Located in front of the Princess Grace Rose Garden and along the seafront, this accommodation offers a calm and pleasant setting.

Where to sleep in Monaco: best districts
Is spending the night in Monaco worth it?
We think spending a night in Monaco is well worth it if you want to visit all the must-sees (and not just the Rock, home of the Prince’s Palace!). In this case, you’ll need to spend several days on site. Sleeping in Monaco will enable you to take full advantage of the Principality’s assets (gastronomy, nightlife…), and above all to save time on your commute. Although they are relatively short, there are often steep climbs and few crosswalks, which can be tiring!
Accommodation in or around Monaco?
The advantage of sleeping at Monaco-même? Easy access to most tourist attractions, and excellent restaurants. Of course, it’s more affordable to sleep on the French side of the border, as in Beausoleil. On the other hand, your journey times will undoubtedly be longer. However, it’s easy to get around the Principality:
- by bus,
- by cab,
- on foot (ideal for getting a feel for Monaco’s layout, but tiring due to the many climbs and stairs, as public elevators are slow),
- with the Monaco Bus Tour,
- with Le Petit Train Touristique (departure and arrival at the Oceanographic Museum).
The best areas to stay in Monaco – map
A map to orient you with the 3 districts where to sleep in Monaco will soon be available! Please note that we have deliberately excluded the Monaco-Ville district, better known as the Rocher, which has no hotels.
Sleeping in Monte Carlo
It’s the Principality’s most famous district, but also its most luxurious and largest. It can be divided into 2 zones, one being the center, where you’ll find emblematic tourist sites (tourist office, Casino), 5-star palaces, gourmet restaurants, nightlife (clubs, opera, theater) and luxury boutiques. The second is Larvotto, where the beach of the same name stretches out, with restaurants, resort hotels and numerous residences. This district is the densest in Monaco.
Benefits:
- in the center, easy access to iconic tourist sites, hotels, gourmet restaurants and luxury boutiques.
- in the center, an area with easy access to the rest of Monaco.
- swimming at Larvotto.
- lively nightlife (casinos, operas, clubs, bars, etc.).
Disadvantages:
- Potential noise: heavy traffic, nightlife, many tourists.
- Limited parking: downtown Monte Carlo is a very popular area, so there may not be enough spaces in the underground parking lots.
- Don’t stay here if you’re not comfortable in luxury circles.
- Very high urban density: don’t sleep in Monte-Carlo if you don’t like high-rise buildings, which can make you feel suffocated.
- Lack of amenities: there are few or no affordable shops, pharmacies or supermarkets.
- Work in the Larvotto area: there’s a lot of work going on in this area, where the new Portier district on the sea is being built.
Our favorite hotels:
In the Larvotto area, we recommend the Monte-Carlo Bay Hôtel & Resort, with its superb lagoon overlooking the sea – see photos and availability.
In the center of Monte Carlo, we recommend the legendary Hôtel de Paris, combining old-world charm and modernity – see photos and availability.
Sleeping at La Condamine
Monaco’s 2nd largest district, La Condamine includes the Port-Hercule area, occupied by yachts, and numerous museums, notably on the heights of the district, which offer superb panoramic views of the Rock. It’s a lively district, especially with the Place d’Armes market.
Benefits:
- Beautiful old buildings give an idea of what Monaco was like in the past.
- Neighborhood with tourist attractions (Prince Rainier Automobile Collection, Jardin Exotique…).
- Lively district with many shops, restaurants and the Place d’Armes market.
- Amenities (supermarkets, pharmacies, etc.).
- Centrally located in the Port-Hercule area, between Monte Carlo and the Rock.
- Easy access to the Rock and its many tourist attractions (Prince’s Palace, Cathedral, Oceanographic Museum).
- Close to the train station.
Disadvantages:
- In the harbor area, potential music from yacht parties.
- The heights of the district are poorly served by transport and are difficult to access (steep climbs).
Our favorite hotels:
We recommend the Hôtel Miramar, a boutique hotel whose decor plunges you into a boat! – see photos and availability.
We recommend the Port Palace for its view of Port Hercule and the Rocher from its La Môme restaurant – see photos and availability.
Sleeping in Fontvieille
Fontvieille is a neighborhood on a human scale, more like a French seaside resort. There is less urban densification and you’ll find many amenities in this family-friendly, residential area of Monaco. We liked this area for its harbor: it’s great to walk up to the lighthouse at the end of the harbor breakwater, and admire the sea as far as the eye can see!
Benefits:
- Tranquility, a neighborhood that is not overly urbanized.
- The beauty of the Port de Fontvieille, especially at night with the view of the illuminated Rock (Palais Princier, Oceanographic Museum and Cathedral).
- Amenities: restaurants and shops, especially along the harbor.
- Easy access to certain tourist sites (Princess Grace Rose Garden, Stamp Museum, Animal Garden, etc.).
Disadvantages:
- If you’re looking for a luxury experience, don’t stay in this neighborhood.
- The neighborhood is less well served by public transport than the others, and can seem out of the center of town.
- Nightlife is not well developed.
Our favorite hotel:
We recommend the Colombus Hotel, a quiet establishment with contemporary decor – see photos and availability.
Sleeping in Beausoleil
Beausoleil is a French commune bordering Monaco. It may be worth staying there to save money. Monte Carlo is within easy walking distance of Beausoleil. Don’t worry, there’s no tangible border: we crossed over to the French side without even realizing it!
Benefits:
- Savings on the price of accommodation.
- Numerous amenities (supermarkets, pharmacies, etc.).
- Easy access to Monte Carlo, on foot.
- A less luxurious, more family-oriented environment.
Disadvantages:
- A less luxurious, more family-oriented environment.
- Lesser immersion in Monegasque culture (you won’t see portraits of the Prince in any of Beausoleil’s hotels!)
- Longer travel times, more difficulties getting to certain tourist sites.
- It’s not so easy to enjoy Monaco’s nightlife (clubs, gourmet restaurants…).
Our favorite hotels:
We recommend the Hotel Olympia, an elegant building just a 5-minute walk from the center of Monte Carlo – see photos and availability.
We also recommend the Appart Hôtel Adagio Monaco Palais Joséphine, with its outdoor swimming pool on the roof terrace – see photos and availability.

When to book your hotel
Monaco is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, as evidenced by its cosmopolitan, English-speaking character. The Principality also plays host to international events such as the Monaco Yacht Show at the end of September and the famous Monaco Grand Prix in May. Hotels are in full swing, and prices are skyrocketing! We therefore advise you to book your hotel as early as possible before your departure to benefit from the best prices and, above all, to have plenty of choice! Don’t hesitate to check out the hotels available for your dates.
Some additional tips
- Parking: we advise you to bear in mind that free outdoor parking in Monaco is virtually impossible. Most of the parking spaces are in paid underground parking lots (note, however, that parking is free if you stay less than 1 hour). You can opt for the ZAC Saint-Antoine parking lot in Cap d’Ail, which will cost you €4 for 2 hours, instead of 7 hours in a parking lot inside the Principality.
- Public transport in town: Several bus lines serve the various districts of Monaco, and you can even check traffic in real time on the official website here! Choose to pay by contactless credit card or via the Monapass app. If you wish to pay in cash, the rate will be more expensive and you’ll need to top up!
- Cabs: in Monaco, cab fares are fixed. Whatever your journey, it will cost you €18! For more information, visit the official Monaco cab website here.
- If you’re staying in a 5-star luxury hotel, we recommend that you take good care of your appearance and arrive by car. Don’t forget to tip valets, baggage handlers and cleaning staff. He will visit your room at least once a day. If you don’t want to be disturbed, don’t forget to put the sign on your door handle!
Where to eat in Monaco
Monaco has a great choice of restaurants, and there really is something for every taste and style! We’ve tried out a few for you, and they’ll be featured in our next article on the best restaurants to eat in Monaco:
- Restaurant Le Pavyllon – chef Yannick Alléno’s 1-star restaurant offering bold Mediterranean cuisine at the Hôtel Hermitage.
- Restaurant Chez Pierre – refined bistro cuisine that revisits the classics of French gastronomy.
- Restaurant Beef Bar: a chic restaurant specializing in the preparation of exceptional meats.

4. Hermitage Hotel
Why stay at the Hôtel Hermitage?
The Hôtel Hermitage is Monaco’s second best-known 5-star luxury hotel. It’s housed in a beautiful historic Belle Époque building, which can even be seen below from the Port-Hercule. Inside, you’ll need a map to find your way around, as the hotel is huge. The decor, whether in the common areas or the bedrooms, is chic and rococo. In addition to a swimming pool and gym, you’ll find several bars, as well as chef Yannick Alléno’s succulent 1-star restaurant, Pavyllon. We really appreciated its contemporary furnishings, which contrasted with the atmosphere of the rest of the establishment. And don’t miss the Eiffel dome in the reception area of the second building!

Why stay at the Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo?
This is the Principality’s latest 5-star hotel. This establishment is also located in the center of Monte-Carlo, just above Metropole Shopping Monte-Carlo. It doesn’t face directly onto the road, which means it can offer its customers a certain amount of peace and quiet. The decor is classic and rococo, except in certain areas such as the Spa, designed by architect Didier Gomez. He also designed Yoshi, the Côte d’Azur’s only Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant. If Asian cuisine isn’t your thing, you can enjoy gourmet Mediterranean cuisine at Christophe Cussac’s Les Ambassadeurs restaurant, or lunch at L’Odyssey, designed by Karl Lagerfeld.

We were delighted to discover this boutique hotel! We like establishments that have a strong identity in their decor, and we were well served! This small hotel has a marine atmosphere. Everything, from the corridors to the rooms, is designed to make you feel like you’re in a boat. However, each room has its own theme, and they are all modular. 8. Columbus Hotel
Why stay at the Columbus Hotel?
We ended our stay in Monaco at the Colombus Hôtel. Having previously slept in upscale establishments, we feared a sharp contrast with this hotel. On the contrary, we were pleasantly surprised, right from the reception and its beautiful contemporary decor. Our room wasn’t very bright or well soundproofed, but it was well laid out, and the bedding was comfortable. The restaurant, Le Tavolo, was top-notch, as was the service, especially the baggage handlers. Its location in the Fontvieille district was a real coup de coeur, as you can be at the Princess Grace Rose Garden or the seaside in just a few minutes’ walk! Please note that you have to leave the hotel to get to the outdoor pool.

9. Port Palace
Why stay at the Port Palace?
The Port Palace is adjacent to the Hotel Miramar. Despite having an extra star, we were disappointed by the decor of this establishment, which could do with a refresh, but above all by the inadequate soundproofing. We heard music coming from the port most of the night. Please note, however, that the hotel will soon be undergoing renovations. These drawbacks aside, we loved the hotel’s restaurant, La Môme, where we had breakfast. Located on the 6th floor, surrounded by bay windows, it offered us one of our best views of Monaco (even though it was raining!).

10. The Maybourne Riviera
Why stay at the Maybourne Riviera Hotel?
We’ve chosen to mention this hotel last in our list because it’s not located in Monaco itself, but in the neighboring French commune of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. However, this is an exceptional establishment, offering only rooms with a sea view. The architecture of this design hotel is very open to the outside world. From the common areas and swimming pool, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Monaco. Afterwards, you can relax in the spa or gym, or enjoy international cuisine in the restaurant.
