Renowned the world over for the Cannes Film Festival and its famous Promenade de la Croisette, you’ll love discovering this must-see seaside resort on France’s Côte d’Azur! A temple of luxury and gambling, it is home to numerous prestigious hotels, restaurants and casinos. Between the historic Suquet district, the port, the beaches, the market and the museums, we loved this town!
In this article, you’ll discover a list of 15 ideas for the best things to do in Cannes, illustrated by numerous photos. We’ve added a few bonus activities!
This is a completely independent opinion, based on our own experience. We visited the area anonymously, making our own choices, and paying all our bills in full.
1. Stroll along the famous Promenade de la Croisette
Why visit the Promenade de la Croisette?
The Promenade de la Croisette is a must-see avenue on France’s Côte d’Azur. It runs along the Mediterranean Sea for around 3 kilometers from the Palais des Festivals to Port Canto. It embodies luxury, glamour and the French art of living.
What you will see
We observed the many hotels, restaurants and designer boutiques lining the Boulevard de la Croisette. Luxury brands such as Dior, Gucci, Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton follow one another. Along the way, you’ll discover a series of beaches offering different views of the Bay of Cannes. Lost between land and sea, the Croisette is as beautiful by night as it is by day.
How much time to allow
To walk along the Promenade de la Croisette, you’ll need at least 30 minutes to see the best-known section. However, allow more time if you want to go as far as Cap de la Croisette behind Port Canto (approx. 45min).
More information on the Croisette in Cannes
Like Cannes, which was once a small village before becoming a world-famous seaside resort, the Croisette has also undergone a major evolution. A modest coastal path frequented only by donkeys and pilgrims, today the promenade is popular with the world’s rich and famous.
2. Stroll through Le Suquet, the old town
Why visit the historic Le Suquet district?
Le Suquet is Cannes’ historic district, situated on a hill overlooking the harbor and bay. It’s famous for its Provencal charm, with narrow cobbled streets, colorful facades and picturesque squares. We loved strolling through the narrow streets of the old town! It’s not at all the same atmosphere as on the Promenade de la Croisette. Glamour has given way to the charm of the old and the traditional.
What you will see
Housed in an ancient medieval tower, the district is also home to the Museum of World Explorations. Just a few steps away, we recommend a visit to the Place de la Castre for a breathtaking panoramic view of the city. Afterwards, visit the Notre-Dame-de-l’Espérance church, with its interesting architecture and history. We were charmed by Le Suquet and its many treasures. It’s the ideal place to step back in time and discover Cannes in a different light, one of the most beautiful towns on the Côte d’Azur.
How much time to allow
We recommend that you spend at least 2 hours visiting the Suquet district:
- through its narrow alleys,
- enjoy incredible views,
- observe its colorful buildings,
- store in typical boutiques.

3. Sainte-Marguerite island and its Musée du Masque de Fer (Lérins island)
Why visit Sainte-Marguerite Island and its Iron Mask and Fort Royal Museum?
The island’s history is marked by the mysterious legend of the Man in the Iron Mask, who was imprisoned in Fort Royal for 11 long years. At present, it is possible to visit his cell. Disembarked on the island in 1687, he was locked up in a cell designed expressly for him under the orders of King Louis XIV. He was forced to wear an iron mask until his death in 1703. His identity remains a mystery to this day, even if historians have a few clues!
Beyond this myth, the natural environment of Sainte-Marguerite Island charmed us. The museum exhibits collections on regional underwater and land archaeology, and we really enjoyed it too.

We loved visiting Ile Saint-Honorat for its rich historical heritage and natural setting. During our walk around the island, we discovered 7 10th-century chapels and ruins dating back to the 11th century. The most famous chapel is located on the eastern tip of the island, and is called the Chapel of the Trinity. This group of religious buildings belongs to the Abbey of Lérins. There’s also a fortified monastery (currently being renovated), 2 churches and vineyards. A Mediterranean nugget hidden in a green setting!

Cannes is located in southeastern France, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region.
- Close to Mandelieu and its Château de la Napoule beach,
- Between Antibes and Fréjus,
- 40min drive from Nice.
Our map of the city’s top tourist attractions will help you find your way around:
How to get there
To get to Cannes, you can opt for the train. The town is directly linked by TGV to several major French cities, including Paris (5h15), Lyon (4h) and Marseille (2h).
See the available schedules and book your train tickets now.
If you’re traveling by car from elsewhere in France, you can reach Cannes via the A8 motorway or the Autoroute du Soleil. For a more economical route, you can also take the national and departmental roads, such as the D6285.
Finally, if you’re traveling by car from other European countries, we recommend using European freeways, such as the A8 or the Italian A10 (or Autoroute des Fleurs).
Please note that traffic can be heavy, especially during peak and vacation periods. We recommend that you check traffic conditions and plan your itinerary in advance. In addition, make sure you have a motorway sticker in the countries concerned if necessary, and that you respect the Highway Code of the countries you will be crossing.

Tips for visiting Cannes
- Book your accommodation as soon as possible:
Visiting the French Riviera comes at a price, especially if you go during the high season. We recommend that you book your accommodation as early as possible to take advantage of the best rates. Check availability of the best hotels to stay at in Cannes.
- Anticipate crowds and traffic:
Cannes is very busy, especially during the Film Festival and the summer season. If you have the opportunity, we advise you to go outside these 2 highlights. Traffic jams are frequent and numerous due to the density of the population and tourism. For example, a 1-hour journey to Nice can be multiplied by 2 at peak times. If you only want to visit the city centers, opt for the train. On the other hand, don’t hesitate to take your car to visit the hinterland, which is much less crowded!
- Know the local cost of living:
As you will have gathered from this article, Cannes is the temple of luxury and glamour. Prestigious hotels, gourmet restaurants and top fashion houses line the Boulevard de la Croisette. To really get the most out of your experience in the city, we recommend that you set aside a fairly substantial budget. Even more so if you decide to visit during the high season, when prices soar.
- Check the weather:
Cannes enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate. However, temperatures can sometimes rise considerably in summer, which can make outdoor activities uncomfortable (especially if you’re sensitive to heat). We advise you to visit the city and its surroundings in spring, autumn or winter.
Visit Cannes in 1 day
It’s a real challenge, because the city is vast and full of activities! But here’s a summary of the must-haves that can be done in 1 day:
- Start your day with a morning stroll along the Promenade de la Croisette, which is less crowded and therefore more pleasant at this time of day. If you have the opportunity, head east towards the old town.
- On your way, stop off in front of the Palais des Festivals to discover the famous red carpet that many celebrities have walked on.
- Then take a stroll around the old port of Cannes, and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Lérins Islands and the sea. Unfortunately, in just 1 day, you certainly won’t have time to visit an island, but you can at least see them from the harbor.
- Get ready to climb up to the historic Le Suquet district.
- Once you’ve reached the top, take the time to walk around the Place de la Castre and enjoy this exceptional panorama of the city and its bay.
- Visit the Musée des Explorations du Monde and the Église Notre-Dame-d’Espérance, just a few metres from each other.
- Before your meal, stop off at the Marché de Forville to admire the stalls of flowers, seasonal vegetables and Provencal produce.
- Other options for lunch: Restaurant Table 22 for a memorable gastronomic experience!
- For the afternoon, we suggest 2 options depending on your interests: take a long walk in the Parc de La Croix-des-Gardes, or enjoy the Croisette and its beaches.

Visit Cannes in 3 days
For your first 2 days, please refer to the sections above on “Visiting Cannes in 1 day” and “Visiting Cannes in 2 days”. We offer several options according to your personal tastes for your 3rd day, after spending the night in one of the best hotels in Cannes:
- Test the city’s luxury establishments: Michelin-starred restaurants, boutiques of France’s leading fashion houses, casinos in high-end hotels.
- Relax on the Plages du Midi or the Plages de la Bocca: swimming, water sports and relaxation.
- Explore the Pointe de l’Aiguille departmental nature park at Théoule-sur-Mer. It takes 25 minutes by car (or 40 minutes by bus) to get there, but the experience is well worth the detour!
