Is it difficult to park in Nice?
Nice is France’s fifth-largest city and one of the most popular destinations on the Côte d’Azur. Automobile pressure is constant, reaching a critical level from June to August, as well as during Carnival in February. During our summer visits, we noticed that the parking lots in Vieux-Nice and around Place Masséna were fully booked before 10am, a common occurrence from mid-June onwards. Yet the city has more than 60 public parking lots throughout the conurbation, many of which offer the first hour free of charge. The problem isn’t one of regulation – there are no traffic-restricted zones like in some Italian cities – but rather the availability of spaces at the right time and in the right place. Here we detail all the options, from central parking lots to peripheral park-and-ride facilities.
Parking in Nice: summary
Careful street parking
On-street parking is charged from Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm. Watch out for the catch: there is no longer a free hour on the street for visitors (this benefit is now reserved for underground parking lots). Three price zones apply from the first minute: the residential Green Zone at €1.30/hour, the Orange Zone for the city center and shops at €2.50/hour, and the Red Zone on busy roads at €3.00/hour. The maximum duration is set at 2h15 on weekdays and 3h15 on Saturdays. Beyond that, or if you forget to pay, the Forfait Post-Stationnement (FPS) is now €40 (reduced to €28 if you pay promptly). On Sundays and public holidays, parking remains free on the entire street: take advantage of this to plan your visits on those days!
Free parking
Free on-street parking is rare in the hyper-center. A few squares remain on the outskirts of the center in certain streets of the Libération district – notably rue de la Reine Jeanne – or on the Avenue Pauliani side near the former Acropolis, or rue De Maeyer on the Port side. We’ve tested them several times, and they’re always busy from the early hours of the morning. The most efficient alternative is the Parcazur network of secure park-and-ride facilities linked to tramway lines. We recommend this solution for a full day: parking is totally free, provided you validate a Lignes d’Azur round-trip ticket (around €3) to open the exit barrier. Please note that overnight parking is strictly forbidden for tourists. You must collect your car before the end of streetcar service (around 2 a.m.), otherwise you’ll be subject to a heavy daily fine and your vehicle will be blocked. You can also park on rue Auguste Renoir, opposite the Musée des Beaux-arts.

Thanks to the first hour free of charge applied by Régie Parcs d’Azur, the first two hours cost around €2.50 in the Orange Zone. For 24 hours in the city center, we found that public parking lots cost around €27, compared with over €32 for private operators. Parcazur park-and-ride facilities are still the most economical solution for a full day out: we confirm this on every visit.
Essential tips
- In high season, during Carnival and the weekends of July and August, demand is very high. Arrive before 9am or use the Nicetoile parking lot (~2,200 spaces) or the Parcazur park-and-ride facilities on the outskirts.
- If you’re staying in Nice, ask your accommodation provider about any parking rate agreements available.
- Never leave your vehicle on the road for several days at a time: parking fines accumulate quickly, and impounding takes more than 48 hours. Parcazur parking lots also have a 22-hour consecutive limit.
- As in all tourist areas: do not leave any visible objects or luggage in the passenger compartment. Place all your belongings in the closed trunk before arriving at your destination.

Where to park to visit Old Nice and the Cours Saleya
Parking Saleya is a natural base for exploring Old Nice and its market. Located directly beneath the Cours Saleya, this underground parking lot puts you just a few steps from the narrow streets of the historic district. As soon as you leave the parking lot, you’re right in the heart of the bustling market, with no need for a long walk. The 1.90m height limit excludes tall vehicles – we had to turn off at the Palais de la Justice parking lot when travelling in a minivan. On market days, from Tuesday to Sunday, we recommend arriving before 9 a.m. to find a place without difficulty.
Where to park to visit the Promenade des Anglais and the beaches
Parking Sulzer, at 103 Quai des États-Unis, is the most direct route to the Promenade des Anglais and the pebble beaches. Its maximum height of 2.10m makes it suitable for SUVs and MPVs – an advantage we particularly appreciated on a family trip. The Promenade des Anglais literally begins just outside the parking lot. For an approach from Place Masséna, Parking Palais Masséna provides access to both the seafront and the commercial heart of the city, which we recommend if you’re arriving from the center.
Where to park to visit MAMAC and Place Garibaldi?
The Parking Promenade des Arts on avenue Saint-Jean-Baptiste is the best-positioned parking spot. Although it used to serve the MAMAC (currently closed for major extension work on the Coulée Verte), it’s still ideal for exploring the Place Garibaldi, the antiques district and the city’s “hors les murs” art trails. We particularly like it because it’s one of the few central parking lots with a 24-hour human presence on site.

Parking Saleya
The Parking Saleya occupies a unique position in Nice’s parking system: it’s the only underground parking lot located directly beneath the historic heart of the city, at the foot of the Cours Saleya market. It offers a free first hour and operates 24 hours a day.

Parking Nicetoile
Parking Nicetoile is the largest underground parking lot in the city center, with around 2,200 spaces. Located under the shopping center of the same name on Avenue Jean Médecin, it is the most reliable fallback solution when smaller parking lots are full. We parked there several times in high season and it was always available. Its direct connection to tramway lines L1 and L2 also makes it the best starting point for getting to Nice-Côte d’Azur airport, which we recommend if you have a flight at the end of your stay.

Parking Promenade des Arts
The Parking Promenade des Arts is part of the Régie Parcs d’Azur network, which means that the first hour is free, with sliding-scale rates over time. We have noted a significant advantage over other central parking lots: a security guard is continuously on site, 24 hours a day, in addition to the video surveillance. It’s also the only parking lot in the center with a secure bike room. We recommend it first and foremost for stays of several hours in the Garibaldi district.

Its maximum height of 2.10m sets it apart from other central parking lots, and enables it to accommodate SUVs, minivans and converted vans. The first hour is free and the parking lot is open all year round.

Parcazur Henri Sappia
The Parcazur Henri Sappia is the main park-and-ride facility on the North Shore, directly accessible from the A8 Nice-Nord motorway exit. It allows you to avoid crossing the city and is the most economical solution for a full day in the city center. Parking is entirely free on condition that you validate a Lignes d’Azur round-trip ticket. We timed the journey from this parking lot to Place Masséna by tramway: less than 15 minutes. The parking lot is guarded 24 hours a day, which we consider a major advantage for longer stays or late-night returns.

Where can I park for free in Nice?
Free parking in Nice is a rare commodity in the city center, but there are a few solutions for travelers who want to keep costs down. Here, we present you with the available alternatives, while being transparent about their respective constraints.
The Parcazur park-and-ride network is the safest and most reliable solution. The principle is simple: you leave your vehicle in a car park on the outskirts of town and validate a Lignes d’Azur round-trip ticket to open the exit barrier. We’ve calculated the savings over the course of a day: the total cost of transport is around €3, compared with €15 to €30 for central parking. Below are the four main sites, covering the main entry routes into the city:
- Parcazur Henri Sappia (Nice-Nord / A8): 765 places
- Parcazur Charles Ehrmann (Nice-Ouest / A8): 628 spaces
- Parcazur Vauban (Nice-Est): 361 places
- Parcazur Carras – Les Bosquets (Nice-Sud Ouest / Promenade): 241 places
Outside the Parcazur network, some outlying residential areas still offer free on-street parking. The heights of Cimiez, the side streets of the Pasteur district and the upper part of the Libération have unpaid, unsupervised parking spaces that are hotly contested from 8am. We don’t recommend relying on these spots on high-season weekends. For a one-off alternative, the Nice TNL shopping center in the Riquier district offers the first two hours free on purchases of €15 or more: we used it during a quick stopover in the area.

Where to avoid parking in Nice?
Parking regulations in Nice include several zones where the risk of penalties is high or where traffic conditions make the experience particularly difficult. It’s best to get to know them before you start looking for a place.
- Historic Old Nice: entirely pedestrian zone, protected by automatic retractable bollards. Access is strictly forbidden under penalty of immediate fine, with no exceptions or special time slots.
- The hyper-center on roads (Avenue Jean Médecin, Rue Gioffredo, Place Masséna): extremely dense traffic, shared lanes between streetcars and buses, and virtually no chance of finding a free space during the day. We advise against venturing out by car without first reserving underground parking.
- The area around Port Lympia during ferry departures: extreme congestion during embarkation and disembarkation operations to Corsica. The queues go right up to the main arteries of the district.
- Le fond du Port: areas with very high private rates, up to €8 an hour in areas not regulated by the municipality. Always check the pricing conditions before committing to these spaces.

Where can I park in Nice without walking too far?
This depends on your destination in the city. For Vieux-Nice and the Cours Saleya market, Parking Saleya takes you directly to the market. For the beach and Promenade des Anglais, Parking Sulzer faces the sea. For the shopping center and shops on Avenue Jean Médecin, Parking Nicetoile has elevators leading directly into the aisles – we particularly appreciate this for families with luggage. Parking Palais Masséna offers convenient access to both the beach and Place Masséna, which we recommend if you want to combine the two destinations.
Which parking lots are the safest in Nice?
Two parking lots in particular stand out in terms of safety. The Promenade des Arts parking lot combines video surveillance with the presence of an agent on site at all times – the highest level of surveillance in the city center. The Parcazur Henri Sappia is also guarded 24 hours a day, in addition to the video surveillance system. For multi-day stays, we recommend these two options. The Indigo Neo and Interparking platforms offer discounted 3 or 7-day passes. We advise you never to leave any visible objects in the passenger compartment, whatever parking you choose.
Are there any 24-hour parking lots in Nice?
Yes, the good news is that the large underground parking lots in the center (Saleya, Nicetoile, Promenade des Arts, Sulzer) all operate 24/7. However, beware of Parcazur park-and-ride facilities: although they open early, they close at night (between 2 and 4.30 a.m.). Cars are not allowed to sleep in them, making them unusable for multi-day residential parking.
Where is the cheapest parking lot in Nice?
For short-term parking (less than 2 hours), use the underground parking lots of the Régie Parcs d’Azur (Promenade des Arts, Sulzer…), where the first hour is entirely free, unlike street parking, which is charged from the first minute. For a full day, the Parcazur network is unbeatable (free with your €3 round-trip streetcar ticket).
Is it possible to reserve a parking lot in Nice in advance?
Yes, for underground parking lots. The Parclick, Onepark and Zenpark platforms and the Indigo Neo application allow you to book and pay online, with discounts of up to 40% to 50% on 3 to 7-day packages. We tested Parclick during an extended stay and the savings are real. This option is particularly recommended if your stay falls during the Nice Carnival or on weekends in July and August, periods when demand explodes. On the other hand, the road network and the Parcazur park-and-ride facilities do not offer any reservation system, and we advise you to organize these options in real time.
Is weekend parking free in Nice?
On Sundays and public holidays, on-street parking is completely free in Nice. We have often observed that this detail is overlooked by travelers calculating their parking budget. On Saturdays, however, parking is still charged until 8pm, with a maximum time limit of 3 hours 15 minutes instead of 2 hours 15 minutes on weekdays, and the FPS is still charged if the time limit is exceeded. Underground parking lots and Parcazur park-and-ride facilities maintain their usual rates on Saturdays and Sundays: we advise you to take this into account in your planning.
