Is Hôtel des Augustins worth it? Our review

Hôtel des Augustins is one of our favorite addresses in Aix-en-Provence. We loved its character, simplicity and authenticity. Housed in a former medieval convent, the hotel has preserved many of its original features, such as stone vaults and Gothic pillars, while integrating them into a warm and welcoming setting.

Hôtel des Augustins (Aix-en-Provence): frontage

For us, this is one of the city’s finest hotels, offering a unique and authentic experience to its visitors. The warm ambience and attentive service make this hotel a haven of peace where you can feel right at home. We highly recommend Hôtel des Augustins for an unforgettable stay in Aix-en-Provence.

Decoration and atmosphere

From the moment you enter the vaulted hall, you’ll be immersed in a discreetly elegant ambience: original stonework, soft lighting, contemporary furnishings that emphasize without overpowering the historic volumes. We appreciated this combination of modernity and heritage. The common areas are welcoming, the staff smiling and available.

The room

During our stay, we stayed in a “Standard” room. It was meticulously furnished: natural beige and brown tones, good bedding, functional desk, minibar, small flat-screen TV. We had a good night’s sleep.

Hôtel des Augustins (Aix-en-Provence): bed

A large window let in light and offered a view of Aix-en-Provence’s lively pedestrian street. Nothing excessive, but everything was in place for a comfortable stay. Soundproofing is good, which is appreciated in a city center.

Hôtel des Augustins (Aix-en-Provence): room

For us, this room is perfectly suited to the needs of a weekend or short tourist stay.

The bathroom

The bathroom was equipped with a bathtub (an important asset if you like baths), a large mirror and Argan Source toiletries.

The breakfast

The buffet breakfast is held every morning in the beautiful fireplace room mentioned above. We appreciated the presence of local products such as artisan jams and regional cheeses.

There was also fresh bread and quality pastries. However, we found the offer a little limited in terms of choice.

The bar

The lounge bar, with its fireplace and large library, is ideal for a drink or a quiet read after a day’s sightseeing. It’s an inviting place to stroll and relax. We felt (almost) at home.

History

Hôtel des Augustins occupies the former chapel of the Couvent des Grands Augustins, founded in the 14th century in the heart of Aix-en-Provence. We learned that the building was part of a vast religious complex that once stretched as far as the Cours Mirabeau, now one of the city’s main thoroughfares. The conventual church, enlarged in the 15th and 16th centuries, has long been a major center of Aix-en-Provence’s intellectual and spiritual life.

Hôtel des Augustins (Aix-en-Provence): history

Like many religious buildings in France, the convent was closed during the French Revolution in 1790. The church was demolished shortly afterwards, and only a fragment of the ensemble has survived: the chapel, whose original volumes now form the main space of the hotel. The Gothic arches, vaulted ceilings and exposed stonework bear witness to medieval architecture that has remained intact despite the transformations.

Its conversion into a hotel dates back to 1892, when part of the building was refurbished to accommodate travelers. Since then, it has undergone several renovations, but without losing its identity.

Did you know? Today, the Hôtel des Augustins is one of Aix’s last remaining hotels housed in a medieval religious building.
