Is it difficult to park in Aix-en-Provence?
Finding a place to stay in Aix-en-Provence is a real challenge, especially if you’re aiming for the historic center. As we saw on our visits to the city, the center is almost entirely pedestrianized or reserved for residents, and the few surface parking spaces are filling up at an alarming rate. Underground parking lots remain the only serious solution for parking close to major tourist routes. The situation gets worse on market mornings, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, as well as on peak-season weekends, when parking pressure is at its peak. Arriving early, ideally before 09:30, is the golden rule to remember if you want to avoid shooting.

Parking in Aix-en-Provence: summary
Careful street parking
Surface parking in Aix-en-Provence is subject to strict regulations. The historic center is protected by retractable bollards and an automatic license plate reading system: unauthorized entry triggers a fine of around €135, plus processing fees for rental vehicles. The few paid surface parking spaces available are limited to 2 hours, making them unsuitable for a day’s visit. Outside controlled zones, free parking is available at certain times – between 12pm and 2pm, at night from 7pm to 8am, and on Sundays and public holidays – but availability is unpredictable and rotation complex to manage.

Free parking
Free options in Aix-en-Provence are very limited and require a certain amount of organization. The most accessible solution is to park in the peripheral sports parks or in certain outlying residential areas, but these locations then involve a 20-25min walk or the use of a city bus line to reach the center. We describe all these alternatives in greater detail later in the article.

The main parking lots for tourists
- Parking Rotonde – Underground, 24 hours a day, chargeable
The largest and most central, ideal for walking to Cours Mirabeau and Place de la Rotonde - Parking Cardeurs – Underground, 24 hours a day, chargeable

The most economical solution, in the southern suburbs, whose ticket includes a return bus to the center
Details of each parking lot later in the article.

24-hour package: between 20.00 and 26.00 euros

Essential tips
- In high season, demand is very strong. It is imperative to arrive before 09:30 to find a place, especially on market days (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday).
- If you’re staying in Aix-en-Provence, ask your accommodation provider about parking options before you arrive.
- If your hotel is located in the pedestrian zone, send your license plate to the hotel in advance so that it can be registered with the town hall’s access control department.
- As in any busy tourist area: don’t leave any visible objects in the passenger compartment. Store all your belongings in the locked trunk before arriving at your destination.

Where to park to get closer to specific places in Aix-en-Provence
Aix-en-Provence is rich in attractions, many of which are clustered in the historic center, but some are off the beaten track, so here are our recommendations for each.
See our article on the best attractions in Aix-en-Provence.
Where to park to visit the historic center: Cours Mirabeau and Place de la Rotonde
To stroll along the Cours Mirabeau to Place de la Rotonde, Parking Rotonde is the most convenient option. Pedestrian access brings you directly to the foot of the famous fountain, without having to cross narrow streets or climb stairs. We particularly appreciate the clarity of the internal signage and the monumental capacity of the site – 1,800 seats – which make it the most reassuring choice during busy periods. What’s more, the exit opens onto an open space, making it much easier to find your way around the center as soon as you step inside.

Where to park to visit Saint-Sauveur Cathedral
The Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur is one of Aix-en-Provence’s most visited monuments, nestled in the heart of Old Aix. To get as close as possible, there are two main options:
- Parking Cardeurs – Located just below the Place des Cardeurs, it takes less than 3 minutes to walk to the cathedral through the medieval heart of the city.
- Parking Pasteur – Located to the north of the ring of boulevards, ideal if you want to avoid the traffic jams in the center, then walk down to the cathedral.

Where can I park to visit Montagne Sainte-Victoire?
To reach the Montagne Sainte Victoire, the Parking des Deux Aiguilles is the obvious choice: it’s located along the Route Cézanne, in the commune of Saint-Antonin-sur-Bayon, accessible via the D17 departmental road. From here, pedestrian access leads directly to the start of hiking trails, notably the red trail leading to the Croix de Provence. We recommend arriving early in the morning in summer, as capacity is limited and visitor numbers rise sharply in fine weather.

Where can I park for free in Aix-en-Provence?
Free options in Aix-en-Provence are very limited, and you need to be careful. Here we present you with some of the low-cost alternatives available, while being transparent about their respective constraints.
- Off-peak surface parking: some paid surface parking zones become free between 12pm and 2pm, at night from 7pm to 8am, and on Sundays and public holidays. Demand remains high and rotation complex, but the option is there for those who arrive at the right time.
- Surrounding sports parks: unregulated sites still exist around the Val de l’Arc and some sports facilities on the edge of town (GPS: 43.5181, 5.4632). From there, it’s a 20-25 minute walk or a city bus ride to the historic center.
- Outlying residential areas (north, avenue de la Violette, southwest Jas de Bouffan) (GPS: 43.5350, 5.4460): a few spaces remain in these residential areas, but they are highly prized by local residents. Access to the center involves a significant ascent on foot and a noticeable difference in altitude. Reserved for early risers.

Where to avoid parking in Aix-en-Provence?
Parking regulations in Aix-en-Provence are particularly strict. It’s best to be aware of the pitfalls before leaving the car anywhere, or risk financial penalties.
- Pedestrianized historic center (access controlled by retractable bollards): the entire historic center of Aix is equipped with an automatic license plate reading system. Entry without a resident’s badge or prior hotel authorization triggers an automatic fine of around €135. In the case of rental cars, the agency will add a processing fee, which may occur several weeks after the stay.
- Above-ground market and delivery bays: parking is strictly forbidden in these highly supervised bays, on pain of immediate removal by the pound, which is particularly active on market mornings in the Place des Prêcheurs, Place de Verdun and Place de la Madeleine.

Frequently asked questions
Where to park without walking too far in Aix-en-Provence?
For families with baby carriages, people with reduced mobility, or simply those who prefer to avoid steep inclines, Parking Rotonde is the most suitable option. Its many modern elevators open onto the Place de la Rotonde, the natural entrance to the Cours Mirabeau, with no stairs to climb. However, we would like to emphasize an important regulatory point: the European disability card cannot be used to cross the bollards in the pedestrian zone without prior registration. If your accommodation is located in this zone, it is imperative that you provide your license plate to the establishment beforehand, so that it can be declared to the Aix-en-Provence Town Hall access service.

Secure underground parking lots in Aix-en-Provence
If you’re leaving your car for several days or traveling with luggage, two parking lots stand out for their particularly high level of security. The Rotonde and Cardeurs parking lots are both enclosed, illuminated underground structures under Semepa’s 24-hour video surveillance. For an extended stay, these two facilities offer the best combination of accessibility and peace of mind.
Is there a 24-hour parking lot in Aix-en-Provence?
Good news for travelers arriving at night or leaving early in the morning: several parking lots in Aix-en-Provence operate continuously, 7 days a week, including the Rotonde, Cardeurs, Mignet, Carnot, Pasteur and Méjanes parking lots. Their automatic pay stations accept cash as well as bankcards (with or without contact). If you choose to park on the street instead, payment can be made directly on your smartphone via the PayByPhone and Flowbird mobile applications.

Where is the cheapest parking lot in Aix-en-Provence?
Park-and-ride facilities, including Krypton and Plan d’Aillane, are by far the most attractive fare options. For just €3.00 a day, parking is included and bus travel is free for vehicle occupants (up to 5 people travelling together). On the other hand, you’ll be a few kilometers away and dependent on the Aixpress line timetable.

Can I reserve a parking lot in Aix-en-Provence in advance?
The municipal parking lots managed by Semepa do not offer traditional hourly advance reservations. However, for certain private parking lots in the center, daily reservations are possible via the Indigo Neo application. We recommend that you check availability directly on the application before you leave, especially during high season or major cultural events.

How do Aix-en-Provence’s park-and-ride facilities work?
Park-and-ride facilities are particularly easy to use. Located at strategic entrances to the town – including Krypton to the south, Brunet and the Route des Alpes parking lot – they offer secure parking away from the traffic jams of the town center. The barcode on your parking ticket then serves as a free, round-trip ticket on the city bus network for the vehicle’s passengers (up to a maximum of 5 people). An efficient system that we gladly recommend, especially for families, whose cost/practice ratio is hard to match in Aix-en-Provence.
