Practical advice
Allow between 3 hours and 1 day depending on the excursion you choose. We recommend you take sun cream and a hat, as the sun is very strong at sea. You’ll have the chance to grab a bite to eat on some day trips. Here are our favorites:

2. Lazing on the Plage du Veillat
Why visit Saint-Raphaël beach?
Nestled in the heart of the town, Plage du Veillat is the seaside resort’s largest sandy beach. The sand is fine and the slope gentle, ideal for families. What’s more, its location means you can reach the city’s main points of interest (Basilique Notre-Dame de la Victoire, Casino Barrière, Vieux Port…) on foot from the beach. We really enjoyed relaxing here after a day exploring the French Riviera.
Practical advice
- This beach has lifeguards and showers. Pets are not allowed.
- Access: St Raphaël beach is within easy walking distance. It is also served by bus routes 05, 21 and C of the conurbation’s transport network.

3. Admire the Calanque de Santa Lucia
Why visit the Calanque de Saint-Raphaël?
Nestled between sheer cliffs, Saint-Raphaël’s Calanque de Santa Lucia is a spellbinding natural spectacle. It is not very popular due to its difficult access. A great way to escape the crowded beaches of summer. We found the setting very pleasant. We enjoyed the shady spots under the pine trees. Here, the wild beauty of nature mingles with the iodized breath of the Mediterranean. A must for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts.
Practical advice
- Access: We recommend that you bring suitable footwear to this cove. To get there, you’ll have to walk on paths, climb steps and move through rocky terrain.
There are 2 ways to get to Calanque Santa Lucia, with detailed itineraries here. - Parking: A few spaces are available at the roadside, but there is no parking lot in the immediate vicinity. The nearest are located in the city center, near the Port of Santa Lucia. We therefore recommend that you come early enough to park easily.
4. Driving on the Corniche de l’Esterel
Why explore the Corniche d’Or by car?
We loved driving along the magnificent Corniche de l’Esterel road. Connecting Cannes to Saint Raphaël, this road is one of the most beautiful in France. Alternating between the blue of the sea, the green of the vegetation and the red of the Esterel, this itinerary is sure to delight your eyes. If you’re travelling by car, don’t miss this iconic coastal road near Saint-Raphaël.
Practical advice
- To reach the road from St Raphaël, the quickest route is to take the D559 towards Théoule-sur-Mer. After about 5km, turn left onto the D2559, which runs along the coast. You’ll reach the Corniche d’Or road after about 2km.
- Allow around 2 hours and 60km if you wish to cover the entire route. That is, from Saint-Raphaël to Cannes.
- At the end of the tour, treat yourself to a gourmet break in one of our favourite one of our favorite Cannes restaurants!

5. Hiking in the Esterel volcanic massif
Why hike in l’Estérel?
We loved exploring the hidden treasures of a true jewel of the Côte d’Azur, the Massif de l’Esterel. Hiking is one of the must-do activities on the Côte d’Azur! Its landscapes have enchanted us! They come in a palette of colors: you can admire the red rocks that contrast sharply with the turquoise water of the sea just next to them. You’ll discover breathtaking views along hiking trails suitable for all levels.
Hiking in the Esterel volcanic massif is a year-round activity, promising an unforgettable adventure through varied panoramas.

Practical advice
- Although located by the sea, exploring these trails requires at least good footwear. We advise against wearing beachwear.
- In high season, be sure to check the opening hours of the massifs on the official website of the Préfecture du département du Var here before you go hiking. Sometimes they are closed for various reasons.

6. Visit the heart of Saint-Raphaël
Why visit the historic center of St Raphaël?
If you’re visiting the seaside town, we recommend you take the time to explore the historic center. As you stroll through its charming streets, you’ll soak up the authentic atmosphere of Provence and discover its architectural treasures, witnesses to a rich and fascinating past.
We particularly enjoyed discovering the following monuments:
The Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Victoire is one of only 2 basilicas on the Côte d’Azur. We liked this unusual religious building. It’s a clever blend of neo-Byzantine architectural influence with French materials and craftsmanship. Its colorful stained glass windows, mosaics, large fresco and presence in the Saint-Raphaël urban landscape impressed us.
The Tour San Rafeu will introduce you to the medieval history of Saint-Raphaël. This tower, witness to 13th-century episcopal power, offers much more than a spectacular panoramic view. We learned that it was erected not only as a symbol of authority, but also as a strategic observation point. Climb to the top of the 25-metre-high tower and its 129 steps to admire an enchanting landscape, from the peaks of the Estérel to Saint-Tropez.

If you’re in Saint-Raphaël, you can easily reach the basilica and tower on foot.

7. Explore the historic center of Fréjus and its Roman ruins
Why visit the Roman remains of Fréjus?
Fréjus is Saint-Raphaël’s neighboring town. The town, which boasts a number of Roman remains, is easily reached on foot. Unlike Arles or Nîmes, there are no high-rise monuments left, but we did enjoy discovering the Roman Arena, the Roman Amphitheatre and the aqueduct. Take the time to visit these two-thousand-year-old remains!

8. Combine relaxation and history at Plage du Dramont
Why visit the D-Day landing beach in St Raphaël?
One of the most beautiful beaches on the Côte d’Azur, it’s the perfect place for nature and history lovers. We learned that it was on this beach that American soldiers landed on August 15, 1944 to liberate France! We really appreciated the breathtaking view over the hamlet of Dramont and the Île d’Or. This emblematic Saint-Raphaël beach will seduce you with its calm and natural beauty, even in the height of the summer season.
You can easily spend the whole day here:
- Here you’ll find shady picnic spots under the pine trees
- Take time to visit the memorial dedicated to the Allied soldiers who landed on August 15, 1944. It is a poignant testimony to the region’s history.
- The nearby “Lacs Adrénaline” nature center offers paddles, kayaks and canoes for hire, enabling you to explore the magnificent Calanques de l’Esterel.
- At the end of the day, let yourself be enchanted by the sunset illuminating the Île d’Or, an experience not to be missed.

- The beach is located on the Route de la Corniche, in Saint-Raphaël.
- This beach is perfect for families. It is supervised in summer and has WCs and showers. Pets are not allowed.
- Access: This beach is easy to get to.

9. Take a break at Jardin Bonaparte
Why take a walk in the Parc de Saint-Raphaël?
This magnificent 15,000m2 park is a balcony overlooking the sea! We loved strolling here between two visits to the city. Enjoy a breathtaking view of the bay and the old port. If you have children, you’ll find play areas. We liked the majestic palm trees providing shade, which is very welcome in this vast park.
Practical advice
- The garden is located on Quai Albert 1er in Saint-Raphaël
- Access is free of charge.
- People with reduced mobility can access the Jardin Bonaparte from the left by means of an inclined plane.
- There are also public toilets
- For parking, the Parking Bonaparte, located under the park, is the closest.
- The park is open all year round from 9am. Closing times vary according to the time of year. Check them out here.

10. Climbing on the Ferris Wheel
Why take a ride on the Ferris Wheel in St Raphaël?
Located next to the Jardin Bonaparte we mentioned earlier, we think the Saint-Raphaël Ferris Wheel is well worth a visit. Enjoy a unique view of Saint-Raphaël as you climb aboard this 33-meter-high wheel on the seafront. In our opinion, this is a fun activity that will give you a breathtaking view of the sea and the Esterel mountains. Kids will love it!
Before or after your tour, you can wander the sunny paths of the Jardin Bonaparte, visit the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Victoire, stroll around the old port or head for the Veillat beach. All these attractions are within easy reach of the Giant Ferris Wheel.

11. Visit the Archaeological Museum
Why visit the Musée Archéologique de Saint-Raphaël?
Summer or winter, we recommend a visit to the city’s Museum of Archaeology! Located in the old quarter, the museum is housed in a former medieval church listed as a historical monument. This tour combines history, heritage and archaeology, with a breathtaking view from the top of the medieval tower, and will appeal to young and old alike.
You’ll discover that over the centuries, the coasts of Provence have been frequented by Phoenician, Greek, Celtic and Roman navigators. They left behind many traces of their presence, testifying to a prosperous trade.
Here are just a few examples of what you can see:
- The reconstruction of a Roman ship’s cargo, offering a glimpse of maritime trade in Antiquity.
- A collection of amphorae from Roman shipwrecks, testifying to the trade and transport techniques of the period.
- Two floors devoted to prehistory, from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic, with prehistoric objects and tools that illustrate the evolution of Man and his environment.

We didn’t eat there, but we did learn that the Casino de St Raphaël has several restaurants offering refined French and international cuisine. - Plage d’Agay: located in the Agay roadstead, this beach offers an exceptional panorama of the Estérel massif overlooking the bay. The advantage of this beach is that it’s surrounded by numerous restaurants and bars that are easily accessible throughout the day.
- Plage de Beau Rivage (handiplage): located between Plage du Veillat and Port de Santa-Lucia. It consists of areas of narrow sand and pebbles. Here you’ll find a pleasant, shaded promenade along the beach, a children’s playground, mini-golf and ample parking (fee payable). From this beach, enjoy a beautiful view of the bay of Saint-Raphaël and the islet Le Lion de Mer.
- Plage de Boulouris: this large sandy beach is very popular with families. It’s easily accessible and close to the city center (approx. 2km). Boulouris beach offers a magnificent setting with its red rocks, typical of the region.

How do I get to Saint-Raphaël?
To get to St Raphaël, you can opt for the train. The town is directly linked by TGV to several major French cities, including Paris (4h40), Lyon (3h30) and Marseille (2h).

If you’re traveling by car from elsewhere in France, you can reach St Raphaël via the A8 motorway or the Autoroute du Soleil. For a more economical route, you can also take the national and departmental roads, such as the D559.

If you’re traveling by car from other European countries, we recommend using European freeways, such as the A8 or the Italian A10 (or Autoroute des Fleurs).
Please note that traffic can be heavy, especially during peak and vacation periods. We recommend that you check traffic conditions and plan your route in advance. In addition, make sure you have a motorway sticker in the countries concerned, if necessary, and that you respect the Highway Code of the countries you will be crossing.

Note that parking in the Bonaparte, Coullet and Lamartine parking lots is free every Saturday from 2pm to 6pm (except in July and August).
