In this article, you’ll find our reviews of what we think are the best restaurants to eat at in Nice.
The Côte d’Azur’s capital boasts a wide and highly sought-after choice of restaurants, with a wide range to suit all tastes. You’ll discover a cuisine combining land and sea, based on local Provençal produce and blended with Mediterranean notes and flavours, but that’s not all! Reservations are strongly recommended for all establishments where possible.
Culinary discovery is an integral part of the journey andexperience. And we’re convinced that eating well, even on vacation, is essential. So enjoy!
This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the area anonymously, making our own choices, and paying all our bills in full.
Nice’s best restaurants: our 4 favourites
In this article, you’ll find detailed reviews of each of our selected establishments. But we couldn’t resist sharing our favorite restaurants with you right now:
- Restaurant JAN (1 star): we enjoyed a sensory and poetic dining experience here. Owner and culinary director Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, for whom the restaurant is named, takes us on a journey through his childhood memories. This Niçoise restaurant is a must-visit, combining South African influences with French gastronomy.
- Restaurant Sweet Sisters: if you’re looking for a colorful place to enjoy a healthy meal in Nice, this is it. Around the corner, we discovered this pastry shop/salad bar where we made our own well-balanced salad. And we’ve fallen for their “carrot cake”, which is to die for!
- Restaurant Peixes: for seafood fans (and for our own pleasure), this restaurant with its soothing marine ambience offers a modern seafood menu. Dishes that bring out the best in fish and seafood, combining Mediterranean and South American flavors.
- Restaurant La Storia: strolling along the Cour Saleya, we spotted this sunny terrace. The gourmet menu features specialties from Nice. In fact, it was at this table that we tasted pissaladière and daube niçoise for the 1st time. A delight! What’s more, the restaurant offers a children’s menu.

Starred and gourmet restaurants in Nice
1. Restaurant JAN – 1 star
Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen invites us to this confidential place to savor inventive cuisine just a stone’s throw from Port Lympia.
To share memories of his childhood, the chef revisits South African specialties, where he is originally from, and marries them with French gastronomic savoir-faire. Using local produce from Provence and South Africa, the menu takes the senses on a journey. Each dish is a work of culinary art, presented and created with quality ingredients, subtle flavors, some of them surprising.
He’s an artistic culinary director, even a chemist in his approach, who plunges us into his universe and shares his sources of inspiration. The capital of the Côte d’Azur is certainly one of them, as we found some of Nice’s specialties throughout the dishes.
The chef’s work is almost like that of a chemist, the fruit of in-depth, even scientific research to find the right dosage, the right combination of textures and flavors in the mouth. The classic 7-course menu and the signature 8-course menu feature dishes that tell a story for your taste buds. Our dinner was punctuated by a gentle waltz of plates and many surprises from the chef, who was very attentive throughout the evening.
The sommelier gave us excellent advice on food and wine pairing to help us choose between the many French, South African, Corsican and Italian wines.

2. Restaurant Les épicuriens
This particularly refined family venue caught our eye during a visit to the Jean Médecin district. Les épicuriens restaurant wasn’t on our list, but when we read the menu, we couldn’t wait to add it! Gourmet, fine seasonal cuisine awaits you in this gastronomic establishment.
To the delight of our taste buds, the menu featured dishes from both land and sea. You can also opt for gourmet pasta dishes! Several formulas are also available, including 4 at lunchtime and a gourmet menu offering a choice of 2 starters, 2 main courses and 2 desserts. On the menu are some fifty red, white and rosé wines from France’s major wine-growing regions. For our part, we fell for the octopus dish and the creamy homemade madeleines for dessert. Before that, warm and tender homemade black olive bread was served with a rather original appetizer. A real delight!

3. Restaurant La Rotonde (Le Negresco hotel)
In the heart of the legendary Le Negresco palace, the gastronomic table at La Rotonde charmed us from the moment we arrived. After crossing the hotel lobby, we found ourselves under the restaurant’s moving ceiling, depicting a starry night and azure sky. Facing the Promenade des Anglais, we discovered inventive, high-quality cuisine, with fresh, local produce, carefully prepared and refined.
The 2 restaurants at the Hotel Negresco are fortunate to have talented chef Virginie Basselot at the helm of their kitchens. His flagship dishes on the menu of the contemporary brasserie La Rotonde, such as grilled avocado with clementines or veal breast stuffed with Niçoise sauce, are both tasty and surprising.
On the wine list, nearly 70 wines are listed, including some grands crus, with a nice local selection from Provence, but also for the more knowledgeable from the Rhone Valley, Languedoc-Roussillon, Burgundy, Loire Valley, South West, Bordeaux, as well as Italian and Spanish wines.

We had the pleasure of lunching on a quiet terrace in this little street in the old town.
On the menu, a short menu that changes every 2 to 3 months to reflect the seasons and renew tastes! From the appetizer to the dessert, cocktails and wine, everything was perfect! The refined presentation of products on the plate, enhanced by the expertise of chef Aurélien Martin, is just a foretaste of the explosion of flavors on the palate. The very attentive and qualified staff helped to make this meal a moment out of time. The land and sea dishes were delicate, with just the right food and wine pairings. Set in one of Nice’s most magical locations, this is undoubtedly one of the city’s finest restaurants. Whether for the Chantecler restaurant or the contemporary brasserie La Rotonde, Virginie Basselot sources exclusively from local producers.

8. Maïdo Japanese bistro
Japanese bistronomic cuisine in the heart of the Jean Médecin district, that’s what we discovered when we pushed open the door of the Japanese bistro Maïdo in Nice. A friendly, confidential place to eat and drink traditionalizakaya dishes, the equivalent of a French bistro in the Land of the Rising Sun. This is the 1st Nice izakaya opened by our host Kanako.
Fish and meat straight from the market in the Libération district, as well as colorful seasonal vegetables, graced our plates to the delight of our taste buds. Dishes were served tapas-style, and we were able to share several. Theizakaya in Japan is also the place to find traditional Japanese beverages: rare Japanese beers and spirits, sakes and teas. Would you like to have lunch or dinner by the sea? For a drink or a bite to eat, the restaurant Le Plongeoir is a must in Nice. With the added bonus of an idyllic setting: we enjoyed a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean Sea and the lighthouse. It was really poetic, with the clouds and the blues of the sea and sky responding to each other. Admiring the sunset while enjoying a Mediterranean-influenced meal is a unique experience.
In this restaurant between sky and sea, chef Gregory Mélani and his team offer fresh, seasonal, local cuisine with a touch of the sea, including smoked trout, marinated octopus, shrimp, sea bream with rouille emulsion, and grilled sea bass with artichoke barigoule.
