Yes, the Fréjus History Museum is well worth a visit! Many visitors flock to the Côte d’Azur for its beaches, climate and breathtaking scenery. But isn’t the real journey the one during which you immerse yourself in the history of the region you’re visiting? Plunge into the heart of Fréjus’ past, discovering its history during the Roman Empire, the impact of the different reigns that have taken place on the territory and observe the archaeological remains found in the town since the 17th century. Don’t just visit Provence, live it!

Discover Fréjus’ Roman past

Did you know? Fréjus comes from the Roman Forum Iulii.
Indeed, we learned that the seaside town was established on the banks of the Argens River by the Romans from 49 BC onwards. Archaeological research carried out between the 17th and 20th centuries has enabled us to gain a better understanding of the town’s history, urban planning, economy and daily life in Roman times.

We found the model of Forum Iulli at the time of the Great Emprire very interesting. It gave us a better understanding of the town’s historical past, its monuments and Roman remains.

The statuary space

In Fréjus, as in other towns in the south of France such as Nîmes, Arles and Orange, the Roman imprint is very present. You won’t want to miss the remains of the Roman Emprire if you visit the seaside town.
In the museum, you’ll be able to admire numerous ancient sculptures discovered since the 17th century. They were part of the monumental decor of the Roman city’s public and private buildings (theaters, thermal baths, grand residences).

We particularly liked the double head attributed to Hermes. This statue, whose quality and originality are quite remarkable, represents the head of Hermes
Bicephalous. Did you notice that it was this statue that inspired the symbol of the town of Fréjus?
It’s made from Carrara marble, the same material used extensively in the region, and which you’ll find at Villa Kérylos. A reconstruction and contemporary interpretation of an ancient Greek house that we highly recommend you visit!

The ceramics collection

We really liked the ceramic objects. The museum’s selection is diverse. You’ll see terracotta plaques decorated with the heads of divinities, a wide range of table and kitchen crockery and numerous amphorae used to export local wine.

We learned that from Antiquity to the 20th century, there were numerous pottery workshops on the outskirts of Fréjus. In fact, a good-quality clay deposit lay to the north and east of the ancient city. We learned that these clays produced fairly fine, light-colored calcareous ceramics. Note the unusual whiteness of some of the pieces on display!

An impressive mosaic

As we looked at the statuary, our attention was drawn to the panther mosaic in the same room. We were blown away by the excellent state of conservation of this work, discovered over a century ago. At its center is a panther, an animal generally associated with Bacchus but rarely represented on its own. Do you notice the shades of color used on this mosaic? We loved this detail, contrasting with the black and white of the mosaic as a whole.

Don’t overlook the explanatory panel. It allows you to read and understand the mosaic and its various parts.

Discovery of a house under Augustus’ empire

During our visit, we learned that the reign of Augustus (first Roman Emperor from 27 BC to 14 AD) had a major impact on the city’s urban planning. You can observe the model of a house discovered under Place Formigé, in front of the Town Hall. This particularly well-preserved period residence provides an insight into the architecture and organization of homes under the reign of the first Roman emperor. The one pictured is a luxurious home adorned with paintings, mosaics and more.

The necropolises of Forum Iulli

Our visit to the museum revealed that the necropolises (ancient cemeteries) were located outside the walls of Forum Iulii. They were composed of tombs and funerary monuments. The whole thing formed a long ribbon along the city’s access roads.

You’ll be able to see period funerary urns and a painter depicting the layout of necropolises along the roads of yesteryear. We really liked the painting, whose bright colors contrast with the depiction of death.

Where to find the Archaeological Museum

The museum is located in the center of Fréjus
It’s a 30-minute walk from Fréjus beach and a 10-minute walk from the train station.

Access by car and parking

There are a few parking spaces in the street around the museum, but in high season, finding a free space can be a miracle. The nearest parking lot is Parking Paul Vernet, just a 3-minute walk from the museum. It is located at 115 Place Paul Vernet in Fréjus.

We advise you to park as soon as possible, as summer traffic in town can be complicated.

Public transport access

The museum is easily accessible on foot or by bike.

You can also opt for a bus trip. The Musée d’Histoire Locale de Fréjus is served by the 01, A and C bus routes of the local transport network.

The museum has several floors and no elevator. It is not accessible to people with reduced mobility.

Schedules and prices

Museum opening times are as follows:

October 1 to March 31: Tuesday to Saturday, 09:30 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 16:30.
April 1 to September 30: Tuesday to Sunday, 09:30 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 18:00.

Admission is €3.

How long

We recommend that you allow between 1h and 1h30 for a visit to the museum, depending on your interest in the various objects, the Roman Empire and the history of the city.

Best moment

To avoid the summer crowds, it’s best to visit out of season. It’s also a great way to escape the summer heat.

Direction of visit

The tour covers several floors. Each area deals with a theme specific to the city’s Roman archaeology. The museum isn’t huge, so you won’t get lost, and we found the route easy to follow.

Home: history and geographical setting of Forum Iulli, model of Fréjus in ancient times.
Statuary: remarkable sculptures including two-headed Hermes and the magnificent “leopard” mosaic.
Ceramics: evocation of the history of pottery in Fréjus and exhibition of ceramics.
