Where to stay in Toulon: best spots/neighborhoods
Why stay in Toulon?
Located on the Côte d’Azur, Toulon has a rich maritime history, linked to its port and naval base. It doesn’t resemble the surrounding towns, which are true seaside resorts. However, it has a varied and interesting cultural heritage. Between its museums, religious buildings and ancient monuments like the Royal Tower, we loved discovering the city and its architectural treasures.
In addition to its cultural offerings, you’ll enjoy magnificent beaches and superb sea views, particularly from Mont Faron. You can also sample the local gastronomy as you explore the city’s Provencal markets, or enjoy lunch in a quality restaurant. We also recommend a visit to Halles de Toulon – Biltoki. Housed in a historic building, they combine gourmet delights with conviviality. We were won over by Mediterranean cuisine and its heart-warming flavours!
Toulon’s best places to stay: map
You’ll soon find our map to help you find your way, with the 2 main areas to stay in Toulon: the city center with the train station and port, and the corniche (eastern seafront).
Staying in the city center (station-port)
Vibrant and dynamic, Toulon’s city center is home to shopping streets dotted with boutiques, cafés and restaurants. You’ll discover charming squares like Place de la Liberté, as well as historic sites such as Notre-Dame-de-la-Seds Cathedral. The nautical base gives the town a more industrial feel.
Benefits:
- Location: a wide range of restaurants, hotels, bars and shops in the immediate vicinity.
- Activities: you’ll see no time go by as you stroll through the city center, which concentrates most of the city’s tourist attractions: port, arsenal, museums.
- Architecture: like us, you’ll fall under the spell of the colorful little streets and superb buildings of the city center.
- Journey: you won’t miss your train, as you’ll be close to the station.
Disadvantages:
- Noise: France’s leading military port. This can lead to noise pollution, particularly near the arsenal. You won’t hear the sound of the waves.
- Parking: if you’re traveling by car, be aware that most parking lots in the city center are not free.
- Setting: although some streets are charming, you have to bear in mind that Toulon is a more industrial city. It’s not a seaside resort like other Côte d’Azur towns.
Our favorite hotels:
- Hotel Okko – see photos and availability.
- Hotel L’Eautel – see photos and availability.
- Hotel The Originals Boutique – Grand Hôtel de la Gare – see photos and availability.
Staying on the corniche (to the east)
We preferred the area east of downtown. From the corniche, you’ll discover beachfront hotels with breathtaking views over the bay. Enjoy a relaxing atmosphere, the sound of the waves, and the beauty of the surroundings!
Benefits:
- Viewpoints: some of the city’s hotels offer magnificent panoramic views of the bay. Would you like to wake up facing the sea?
- Peace and quiet: hotels on the east coast are more remote, and therefore quieter. Walks along the water’s edge are very pleasant.
- Beaches: you’ll have easier access to Toulon’s beaches, which are concentrated to the east of the city center.
Disadvantages:
- Offer: you’ll have less choice in terms of hotels and restaurants.
- Location: you’ll need to take the car or public transport to get to the city center, or walk at least 30min.
- Cultural life: you’ll be further away from the main tourist attractions in the city center.
Our favorite hotels:
- Best Western Plus La Corniche Hotel – see photos and availability.
- Hôtel Les Voiles – see photos and availability.
Other tips to keep in mind
Toulon is a less popular tourist destination than other towns on the Côte d’Azur. However, it remains very popular during the high season, and prices tend to rise during this period. We recommend that you book your accommodation as early as possible to take advantage of the best rates, and that you use the Booking platform, as hotel calendars are regularly updated.
To get around Toulon, we strongly advise you to have a car. If you’re staying in the city center, it’s a 10-minute drive or a 25-minute bus ride to the nearest beach. What’s more, it’s not easy to find locally available cabs. Don’t hesitate to rent a car to make the most of this destination!
