Why visit the Chapelles des Pénitents in Menton?
Are the Chapelles des Pénitents worth it? Our review
Yes, especially if you love old stones, local history and authentic Mediterranean atmospheres. Even when the chapels are closed (which was the case on our visit), their facades, their location in the narrow streets of the old town and their proximity to the Basilica of Saint-Michel-Archange make them natural stopping-off points on a stroll through Menton. It’s a short tour, easy to fit into an itinerary, and one of the best things to do in Menton.

Why are the Chapelles des Pénitents famous?
The chapels are famous for several reasons:
- They bear witness to the major role played by religious brotherhoods in Menton between the XVIIᵉ and XIXᵉ centuries.
- They are linked to major local religious traditions, in particular processions.
- The Chapelle des Pénitents blancs is a fine example of Ligurian Baroque.
- The Chapelle des Pénitents noirs is more discreet
They are both part of Vieux-Menton’s emblematic landscape, along with the basilica and monumental staircases.

Our favorite moments
At the time of our visit, the chapels were closed, but we really enjoyed them:
- Observe architectural details and sculptures
- Enjoy the peaceful ambience of the surrounding alleyways
- Views of Menton’s rooftops from the old town’s staircases
The Chapelle des Pénitents blancs, with its elegant Baroque façade, is particularly photogenic. The more sober Pénitents noirs church exudes a very authentic atmosphere.

History in brief
As early as the XVIIᵉ century, Menton saw the development of several penitent brotherhoods. The mission of these lay groups was to organize charitable works, perform religious ceremonies and take part in major processions.
- The Pénitents blancs moved into the Chapelle de l’Immaculée-Conception at the end of the XVIIᵉ century.
- The Pénitents noirs occupied the former chapel of the Capuchin convent in the early XVIIIᵉ century.
These two brotherhoods left a lasting mark on the town’s religious and social life.

Best time to visit
In our opinion, the best time is in the morning or late afternoon for the light on the facades. In any case, outside the hottest hours of the day, especially in summer. We found the old town more pleasant earlier in the day.

Length of visit and main difficulties
- Duration: approx. 20-30 minutes to see both chapels from the outside
- Difficulties: many steps, cobbled streets, fairly steep slope
Bring good shoes.

Advice on how to visit
During our visit, we first climbed up to the forecourt of the Basilica of Saint-Michel, which we entered before admiring the façade of the Chapelle des Pénitents blancs, located right next door. Then we strolled through the streets of the old town, where we found the Chapelle des Pénitents noirs. This allowed us to gradually take in the different viewpoints.

La Chapelle des Pénitents blancs (Chapel of the Immaculate Conception)
During our visit to Vieux-Menton, we took the time to stop in front of the Pénitents blancs chapel, located on Place de la Conception, right next to the Saint-Michel-Archange basilica. Its location is simply exceptional!

Nestling on a small suspended square, it overlooks the colorful rooftops of the old town and offers a superb view of the sea. We were immediately captivated by its elegant Baroque façade and the peaceful atmosphere of this iconic square, often bathed in golden light at the end of the day.

Even when the chapel is closed, the experience is well worth the detour. We enjoyed taking the time to observe the architectural details, the play of shadows on the façade and the harmony between the chapel and the neighboring basilica. The ensemble forms one of Menton’s most beautiful settings, and is a must-see when strolling through the historic center. It’s a place that naturally invites contemplation and leaves a lasting impression on the city.
Chapelle des Pénitents noirs (Chapel of Mercy)
We continued our stroll through Menton, discovering the Pénitents noirs chapel on rue Gallieni, a little off the beaten track. Housed in the former Capuchin convent, it boasts a very sober, almost austere facade, in stark contrast to the dazzling baroque of the old town. We found this contrast particularly interesting. Its 35-metre steeple is a real eye-catcher, making it easy to spot the building from nearby streets.

We took time to observe the facade, remodeled in the XIXᵉ century, with its central niche housing the statue of the Virgin of Mercy. The atmosphere is very different from that of the old town: quieter, more discreet, almost timeless. This is an interesting stop-off point to complete the discovery of Menton’s religious heritage and better understand the diversity of its historic buildings.

Frequently asked questions
Who were the Penitents in Menton, and why do we distinguish between black and white?
The Penitents were very active lay brotherhoods between the XVIIᵉ and XIXᵉ centuries. Their role was religious and charitable. They organized processions, took part in major Christian festivals, helped the poorest and accompanied the dead. They therefore played an essential role in the city’s social and spiritual life.
White Penitents and Black Penitents were distinguished mainly by the color of their habit, known as the “alb”, which they wore during ceremonies. Each brotherhood had its own chapel, traditions and missions. The White Penitents were very much a part of everyday religious life, while the Black Penitents were better known for their large-scale processions, particularly on Good Friday.
