7 best gardens in Menton (tips + photos)

Menton is often associated with the sea, its colorful facades and its famous Lemon Festival. However, it was the gardens that impressed us most during our stay on the Côte d’Azur. Here, nature is omnipresent and perfectly integrated into the city. In just a few minutes, you can move from the bustling center to oases of calm, sometimes perched on higher ground, sometimes nestled between two avenues.

These gardens also tell the story of Menton, long prized by the European aristocracy and botanical enthusiasts. An ideal destination for slowing down, strolling and enjoying the mild climate all year round.

Here’s our selection of Menton’s most beautiful gardens, with practical tips for organizing your visits.

Menton’s most beautiful gardens: tips + map

Menton is a destination in a class of its own on the Côte d’Azur. Thanks to its exceptional microclimate, the town offers an impressive concentration of gardens, between sea and hills. Citrus fruits, palm trees, tropical plants and Mediterranean essences grow alongside each other all year round, to the delight of nature lovers… and travelers in search of a peaceful break.

But there’s much more to Menton than its gardens: see our complete guide to planning your stay.

If you only have to visit 3 gardens, we recommend :

  • The Val Rahmeh Botanical Garden: a lush, exotic journey around the world.
  • Jardin Serre de la Madone: a remarkable, elegant and highly structured historic garden.
  • The Citrus Garden of the Palais de Carnolès: a Menton landmark, perfect for learning about the history of lemons and the town.

To help you find your way around, here’s a map of Menton’s main gardens.

1. Val Rahmeh Botanical Garden

Val Rahmeh Botanical Garden, Menton

Why visit? Our review

This is clearly one of our favorites in Menton. The Val Rahmeh Botanical Garden is a true concentrate of the exotic. Spread over 1.5 hectares, we discovered plants from all over the world: palms, bamboos, exotic fruit trees, aquatic plants… The giant water lily pond is absolutely spectacular.

We loved the peaceful atmosphere of the place, very different from the hustle and bustle of the city center. It’s a visit that will appeal as much to botany enthusiasts as to travelers in search of a refreshing change of scenery. Don’t miss the article we devoted to him.

2. Jardin Serre de la Madone

Jardin Serre de la Madone, Menton

Why visit? Our review

The Serre de la Madone garden is a garden in a class of its own, very different from the others. Created by Lawrence Johnston, it stands out as a carefully thought-out work of landscape design. The terraces, staircases, ponds and vistas are superb.

We particularly appreciated its elegant, almost timeless atmosphere. It’s a garden you’ll enjoy visiting slowly, observing details and rare plant associations. Don’t miss the full article we devoted to it.

3. Garden of the Palais de Carnolès

Jardin du Palais de Carnolès, Menton

Why visit? Our review

This is one of Menton’s most emblematic gardens. Set around the former summer residence of the Princes of Monaco, now the Musée des Beaux Arts, it houses one of Europe’s largest citrus collections, with 137 different varieties. As we strolled down the aisles, we also came across a number of sculptures.

The walk is particularly pleasant in winter and early spring, when the trees are laden with fruit and the fragrances fill the garden. We appreciated the flat, spacious grounds, ideal for a leisurely stroll or a family visit.

4. Garden of the former Palace Hôtel Impérial

Garden of the former Palace Hôtel Impérial, Menton

Why visit? Our review

This more discreet garden bears witness to Menton’s prestigious past during the Belle Époque. Around the former Palace Hôtel Impérial, we enjoyed the elegant atmosphere typical of palace gardens, with palm trees and citrus trees.
