The best hotels in Aix-en-Provence: our 4 favorites
Before discovering our detailed reviews of each of the establishments we have selected, take a look at our 4 favorite addresses.
Best luxury hotel: Hôtel particulier Le 28

Open the doors of a 17th-century mansion in the heart of the old town. In this unique establishment, we were won over by its perfect blend of modern and ancient. Large period keys, moldings and marble fireplaces create an authentic atmosphere, while contemporary design adds a real touch of refinement. We discovered tastefully decorated rooms, with bookcases and large mirrors, where every detail tells a story.

Best historical hotel: Hôtel des Augustins

Would you like to spend a magical night in a 12th-century convent? Look no further than this charming establishment, which impressed us with its well-preserved historic setting. Take time to admire the period moldings, high ceilings and colorful stained glass windows that bear witness to the building’s rich past. This is one of our favorite hotels in Aix-en-Provence for its warm, cozy atmosphere in the heart of the old town.

Best boutique hotel: Hotel Escaletto

Facing the famous Thermes Sextius, this small, fully renovated 3-star hotel charmed us with its panoramic rooftop and meticulous decor combining wickerwork and bright colors. We particularly appreciated the staff’s thoughtful attentions, such as the glass of lemon-mint detox water offered on arrival. You’ll love the colorful ambience of this intimate setting with its contemporary Provencal touches.

Best 5-star hotel with garden: Hôtel Le Pigonnet – Esprit de France

In the Aix Sud district, this luxury 18th-century bastide amazed us with its bucolic setting and flower-filled gardens, where many artists and writers would have stayed. We were impressed by the renovation work by Jacques Garcia, who brought a new elegance to the common areas. You’ll enjoy a unique experience in this green oasis just a 20-minute walk from the Cours Mirabeau, where each room tells a different story. The icing on the cake: the Table du Pigonnet is one of the best in town, and we’ve tried it out!

Where to stay in Aix-en-Provence: best districts
Why stay in Aix-en-Provence?
Aix-en-Provence, nicknamed the city of a thousand fountains, is one of Provence’s prettiest towns, where the Mediterranean art of living is fully expressed. We enjoyed strolling along its cobbled streets, discovering its townhouses and colorful markets. This dynamic university town boasts a surprising architectural heritage, renowned museums and refined gastronomy, while retaining the Provencal authenticity that drew us here in the first place.

Aix-en-Provence’s best places to stay: map
Our map to help you find your way, with the main areas to stay in Aix-en-Provence, will be available very soon!
Staying in the historic heart

As you’d expect, the historic heart of Aix-en-Provence is the very soul of the Provencal city. Its picturesque lanes, mansions and shady squares invite you to take a stroll. This district is home to major monuments such as the Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur, the Hôtel de Caumont and the famous Cours Mirabeau. You’ll be right in the center of the bustling markets, boutiques and café terraces that make Aix so charming.
Benefits:
- Close to major tourist attractions
- Authentic atmosphere and non-stop entertainment
- Wide choice of restaurants and stores
- Easy to explore the city on foot
- Tour of the Little Tourist Train – book a ticket
Disadvantages:
- Difficult parking on narrow streets
- Generally higher accommodation prices
- Potential noise from night-time entertainment
Our favorite hotels: Hôtel particulier Le 28, Hôtel des Augustins, Hôtel Escaletto
Staying in Aix Sud

The Aix Sud district promises a quieter, more residential setting, yet is still within easy reach of the city center. We liked this location, which combines tranquility and accessibility, close to Parc Jourdan. The area benefits from a peaceful atmosphere, yet still offers easy access to Aix-en-Provence’s main attractions.
Benefits:
- Quiet, residential atmosphere
- More affordable accommodation
- Easier parking
- Access to downtown in just a few minutes
- Green spaces and children’s playgrounds
Disadvantages:
- Less entertainment and nightlife
- Need to travel to reach the historic center
- More limited choice of restaurants in the immediate vicinity
Our favorite hotel: Hôtel Le Pigonnet – Esprit de France
Staying at Jas de Bouffan (west)

With its wide alleys and sidewalks, the Jas de Bouffan district to the west of Aix-en-Provence appealed to us for its residential character and proximity to the Vasarely Foundation. Admittedly further away from the main attractions, this more modern and quieter area features large open spaces and contemporary accommodation, while retaining easy access to the historic center. We found this area particularly suited to families looking for comfort and tranquility.
Benefits:
- Quiet, family-friendly neighborhood
- Larger spaces and modern hotels
- Generally easier parking
- Close to the Vasarely Foundation and Parc Saint-Mitre
Disadvantages:
- Further from the historic center
- Less traditional Provencal ambience
- Need to use public transport or the car
Our favorite hotel: Radisson Golden Tulip Hotel
Other useful tips to keep in mind
- Aix-en-Provence is an elegant, lively city all year round. As the former capital of Provence, the climate is sunny and pleasant, with mild winters and hot summers. Spring and autumn are particularly recommended for enjoying the terraces and exploring the city without the summer crowds. In summer, hotel demand rises sharply, especially in July, so book your accommodation as early as possible.
- Parking in the historic center can be difficult, especially during the day and on market days. If you’re arriving by car, use the park-and-ride facilities at the entrances to the town, linked by shuttle bus, or choose accommodation with private parking. The city’s website lists the main paying parking lots here.

- Traffic in Aix can be heavy at rush hour, and some areas are pedestrianized, making it easy to get around on foot. To visit the surrounding area – the Montagne Sainte Victoire, the Luberon or the Camargue – renting a car is the best choice. In town, opt for public transport: the Aixenbus network is well served, the Petit Train Touristique(book here) or self-service bicycles with its many cycle paths and pedestrian walkways.
- On the calendar, Aix-en-Provence vibrates all year round thanks to a rich cultural program. In addition to the Festival d’Art Lyrique in July (see here), don’t miss the Easter Festival (see details here), dedicated to classical music, or the Rencontres du neuvième art (comics) in spring here. Colorful markets, the Nuits d’Aix summer festival and film and dance festivals also set the pace in the city. Consult the cultural calendar to prepare your stay here.

- Finally, keep in mind that the hotel offer in Aix-en-Provence is varied but sometimes concentrated in small historic buildings or charming hotels, especially in the city center. Comfort and equipment criteria may therefore differ from one address to another, so be sure to ask before you book.
