Why visit the Carrières des Lumières in Les Baux-de-Provence?
Are the Carrières des Lumières worth it? Our opinion:
Absolutely! This immersive experience transforms former quarries into a cathedral of images, where works of art come to life on a 7,000m² projection surface. We were fascinated by the way the visuals unfolded from floor to ceiling in this place steeped in history.
It’s one of the must-sees in the village of Les Baux-de-Provence.

Why are the Carrières des Lumières so famous?
The Carrières des Lumières owe their renown to their innovative concept, created by Culturespaces, which also launched theAtelier des Lumières in Paris. Since 2012, this digital art center has been projecting the most famous works of art onto the monumental limestone walls of the former quarries.
Every year, immersive exhibitions dedicated to artists such as Van Gogh, Mondrian and Chagall attract over 600,000 visitors from all over the world. During our visit, we were able to admire the most beautiful remains of the Egypt of the Pharaohs and major Orientalist works.

Total immersion in art
The Carrières des Lumières experience transcends the simple art exhibition to create a unique symphony of sight and sound. Works by the great masters come to life on the monumental walls, transforming every nook and cranny into a living tableau. We were taken aback by the sheer scale of the projection, which covers more than 7,000m² of surface area, from the floor to the 14-metre-high ceilings.

This disproportion creates a dizzying sensation where you feel literally absorbed by the art. The video mapping algorithms perfectly match the natural relief of the rock, giving the impression that the quarries have been sculpted to accommodate these digital masterpieces.

The natural architecture of quarries
The old limestone quarries provide an exceptional backdrop for this contemporary artistic experience. These underground cathedrals, shaped by centuries of mining, have remarkable natural acoustics that we found perfect for the show’s soundtrack. The massive pillars left by the quarrymen create monumental perspectives that reinforce the majesty of the projections.

As you stroll along, you’ll discover rooms of varying sizes, each offering a unique atmosphere. The constant temperature of 14°C not only preserves the technical equipment, but also provides a welcome coolness that naturally prolongs contemplation time.

The magic of technology in the service of art
The Carrières des Lumières technical system represents a technological feat that we found fascinating. More than 100 synchronized high-definition video projectors project images with remarkable precision onto irregular walls. The AMIEX® system developed specifically for these spaces manages the spatial distribution of sound, creating an immersive sound bubble that envelops you completely.

Each exhibition requires months of preparation to adapt the works to the unique architectural volume of the venue. The ancient Egyptian masterpieces we admired there were perfectly suited to the location. We were impressed by the fluidity of the transitions between visuals and the perfect synchronization between music and images, which transformed the exhibition into a veritable visual choreography.

Frequently asked questions
Can we take photos in the Carrières des Lumières?
Photos without flash are allowed and even encouraged! We found that the best shots were obtained in manual mode with high ISO sensitivity. Reflections in the water basin offer unique photographic opportunities. However, avoid the use of tripods, which can impede the movement of other visitors.

Do the exhibits change regularly?
Each year, a new main exhibition is created, usually dedicated to a major artist or artistic movement. The short program is also changing to offer regular visitors new discoveries. We advise you to consult the program before your visit to find out about the current exhibition. Some years offer particularly spectacular themes, such as those of the great masters, but also themes more suited to young audiences, such as Tintin or The Little Prince.
