Is Cassis worth a visit? Need some inspiration to plan your weekend or vacation in Provence?

According to French writer Frédéric Mistral: If you’ve seen Paris and not Cassis, you can say: I’ve seen nothing. That just goes to show you what a must-see Cassis is! Nestled between white rock cliffs and the Mediterranean Sea, Cassis has kept its small fishing village soul. It’s one of the most beautiful towns on the Côte d’Azur.

In this article, we give you our 9 reasons for visiting the town, along with practical tips and photos on things to do in Cassis.

Why Cassis is worth a visit reasons

This guide is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.

Bordering the surrounding area with its idyllic landscapes, the Parc National des Calanques has seduced us. We enjoyed hiking its trails, lounging on the fine sand, swimming in the crystal-clear water and taking part in water sports.

Cassis is also well worth a visit for its wine-growing heritage. Nestled in a setting of vineyards and beaches, the town is home to an ancestral know-how that you can discover during a tasting session.

Reason 9: for its history and cultural heritage

Although Cassis is famous for its scenery and beaches, it’s also a town steeped in history! We discovered that it has been inhabited since antiquity. In the Middle Ages, Cassis was a fortified fishing village. In the 16th century, Cassis enjoyed a period of prosperity thanks to tuna fishing. It was one of the main tuna fishing ports in the Mediterranean.

We enjoyed immersing ourselves in the heritage of Cassis and the Mediterranean, admiring its architecture and monuments. Find out more by visiting its cultural and historical highlights, such as

Some disadvantages of a trip to Cassis

Crowds and traffic

Cassis is a very busy town, especially in summer. Parking and traffic can be very difficult. There isn’t much space for cars, and the streets in the city center are narrow and winding. What’s more, there are few free parking spaces, and paid parking lots are often full.

To avoid these difficulties, we recommend that you visit us during the low season. Why not in spring or autumn? So we recommend parking in a parking lot a little way from the city center and then walking.

Parking in Cassis

A sloping city

Although it’s by the sea, Cassis is partly built on high ground. If you want to explore the city on foot, be prepared for gentle climbs and take comfortable shoes. The castle, for example, is located on a cliff top. Be brave, it’s worth the detour!

Ruelle de Cassis

Rates

Visiting the Côte d’Azur isn’t cheap. Accommodation as well as restaurants and excursions cost a certain amount. We recommend booking in advance to take advantage of special rates at the city’s top-rated accommodations. But don’t worry, there are always last-minute offers for impromptu weekends! See our article on the city’s best hotels.

Weather

Summer temperatures can also be quite hot on the Côte d’Azur. If you’re sensitive to heat, go out in the morning and second half of the afternoon. The rest of the year, the climate is generally mild and sunny. Why not visit Cassis and the surrounding area in spring or autumn?
