Our opinion:<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, the Saint-L\u00e9once Cathedral in Fr\u00e9jus is well worth a visit for several reasons:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Its fascinating history:<\/strong> dating back to Antiquity, this historic monument is a privileged witness to the evolution of the town of Fr\u00e9jus through the ages. Its walls have taught us a great deal about the different periods that shaped its construction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Its astonishing, evolving architecture:<\/strong> the buildings are a surprising blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles. We were attentive to every detail, every architectural element. They all tell a story and bear witness to the skills of the craftsmen who helped build it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Its many artistic treasures:<\/strong> paintings, sculptures, stained glass and other precious liturgical objects offer a glimpse of the cultural and spiritual wealth of the area. We invite you to visit it too, for a better comparison of very different styles and atmospheres.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is St. Leonce Cathedral so famous?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fr\u00e9jus Cathedral is famous for its distinctive architecture. It is in fact a <strong>double cathedral<\/strong>, combining the 2 large naves of 2 different churches, built at different times. But it&#8217;s the <strong>baptistery<\/strong> that makes it so famous. Dating from the 5th century, it is one of the oldest in France. It&#8217;s a rare example of<strong>early Christian architecture<\/strong>. Its conservation makes it a focal point that we greatly appreciated during our visit.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The adjoining <strong>cloister<\/strong> is one of the main elements of the Fr\u00e9jus cathedral group. Built in the 13th century, it is a remarkable testimony to the medieval history of Provence. Work was underway at the time of our visit, and we were unable to enjoy the <strong>2-level galleries<\/strong> or the magnificent <strong>medieval painted ceilings<\/strong>. We could only catch a glimpse of it through the windows of the Mus\u00e9e arch\u00e9ologique de Fr\u00e9jus overlooking the cloister.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Fr&#xE9;jus\/n-XwqvJP\/Cath&#xE9;drale-de-Fr&#xE9;jus\/i-KmsfCd6\/0\/DBKbdm9nz5KHg3h9WnBbbCFNWB8sLSq8rRCw7DcPM\/L\/cloitre-travaux-cathedrale-frejus-L.jpg\" alt=\"Cloister of Saint-L&#xE9;once Cathedral in Fr&#xE9;jus\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our favorite moments<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We visited the cathedral in the late morning on a sunny day. The light was exceptional in this dark, contemplative setting.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We loved <strong>its mineral atmosphere<\/strong>. Bare stones<strong> <\/strong>almost everywhere in the building, both inside and out, are made from polychrome sandstone from the Est\u00e9rel region. It gives it the pinkish hue so characteristic of original Provencal buildings.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The baptistery<\/strong> is a marvel! A rare symbol of early Christian art, it offers a fascinating insight into early Christian rites. It is the second oldest in France after Poitiers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The altarpiece of Saint Marguerite<\/strong> in the first chapel on the left in the nave of Saint-\u00c9tienne was awe-inspiring. It is attributed to a 15th-century painter from Nice, Jacopo Durandi. At the same time, a first building was erected where the main nave now stands.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn&#8217;t until the 11th century that other <strong>canonical buildings<\/strong> gradually sprang up around the cathedral, including the cloister and the episcopal residence (today&#8217;s H\u00f4tel de Ville), as well as the parish church, adjacent to the cathedral. This is Saint-\u00c9tienne church. The joining of the two naves, Notre-Dame and Saint-\u00c9tienne, dates back to the 14th century.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Fr&#xE9;jus\/n-XwqvJP\/Cath&#xE9;drale-de-Fr&#xE9;jus\/i-m38pVG6\/0\/wb44fchwzc5vL8BRg99B8mRNv9cb65nnn9CV8mWz\/L\/orgue-voute-cathedrale-frejus-L.jpg\" alt=\"Fr&#xE9;jus Cathedral organ\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, the town of Fr\u00e9jus fortified itself. The episcopal group, too, is protected by a thick, embossed wall, completed by a <strong>high, crenellated tower<\/strong> with machicolations. Over the years, further improvements were made, integrating Gothic elements into this medieval building, such as the openings on the south side.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fr\u00e9jus Cathedral has been a <strong>listed historic monument<\/strong> since 1862. Its rough, pinkish stonework contrasts with the ochre rendering of the H\u00f4tel de Ville (former episcopal residence). The ensemble is decorated in the typical colors of Provencal buildings, with a hint of Italian influence.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Fr&#xE9;jus\/n-XwqvJP\/Cath&#xE9;drale-de-Fr&#xE9;jus\/i-ZVzWn9s\/0\/FcTNgKkk3VbX44DXsTwG2qnfcWDpMSDPWHTSDxNSB\/L\/facade-ouest-cathedrale-frejus-L.jpg\" alt=\"East facade of Fr&#xE9;jus Cathedral\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The bell tower<\/strong> dates back to the 13th century. The golden reflections of its <strong>conical roof<\/strong> enchanted us. They are the result of a mosaic of yellow and green tiles. It rests on a 16th-century <strong>octagonal frame<\/strong>, which in turn rests on an earlier <strong>square base<\/strong>. The bell tower houses 4 bells. One of them was named Saint-L\u00e9once. It was donated by Pope John XXIII in 1303.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Fr&#xE9;jus\/n-XwqvJP\/Cath&#xE9;drale-de-Fr&#xE9;jus\/i-TFPPbDn\/0\/DhSwJDrXfspvwBxH2vSbfXb45fsVJXFHqcBsWGdLd\/L\/clocher-cathedrale-frejus-L.jpg\" alt=\"Fr&#xE9;jus Cathedral bell tower\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br\/>The Gothic portal  <\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Romanesque openings of the baptistery and bell tower coexist with the Gothic style of the cathedral&#8217;s <strong>entrance portal<\/strong>. It was pierced during the Renaissance. We were particularly interested in the scuptured details of its lintel. Dated April 1, 1530, it is believed to be the work of Nice artist Jacopo Durandi. It is topped by splendid cross-headed windows.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Fr&#xE9;jus\/n-XwqvJP\/Cath&#xE9;drale-de-Fr&#xE9;jus\/i-qksN8rF\/0\/DCpNFk7f84kkjMsXXSrqjQHRh2tdHjRTw2tGJfz8S\/L\/linteau-portail-cathedrale-frejus-L.jpg\" alt=\"Entrance portal lintel at Fr&#xE9;jus Cathedral\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To the right of the entrance portal, the <strong>sundial<\/strong> caught our eye. It dates from 1781 and bears a Latin inscription in gilded letters which reads: &#8220;Shadow and light regulate the offices of the clergy, the work of Themis (justice) and Mars (arms), and the assemblies of the elders&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Fr&#xE9;jus\/n-XwqvJP\/Cath&#xE9;drale-de-Fr&#xE9;jus\/i-tWX8h8G\/0\/C8GWHXG3FFM6QZH3KwwhLvp7mm6JXppqT8HSQrJ9c\/L\/cadran-solaire-cathedrale-frejus-L.jpg\" alt=\"Fr&#xE9;jus Cathedral sundial\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Continuation of the tour: the airlock<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entrance portal opens onto a flight of steps leading down to what might be considered a vestibule. To the left, the baptistery; to the right, the narthex; and opposite, an entrance to the cloister, which was closed at the time of our visit.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The early Christian baptistery<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of our favorite moments of the visit. The Fr\u00e9jus baptistery is one of the oldest in France. It&#8217;s an <strong>octagonal room<\/strong> punctuated by antique columns. They probably come from a Roman building and support its cupola.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Fr&#xE9;jus\/n-XwqvJP\/Cath&#xE9;drale-de-Fr&#xE9;jus\/i-QKdh7cM\/0\/D2C3Gngbh6b9XFqXsK8LjHWV3ZdDWmbfxRTDbGZWm\/L\/voutes-baptistere-cathedrale-frejus-L.jpg\" alt=\"Dome of the baptistery at Fr&#xE9;jus Cathedral\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the center, the vat was used for <strong>baptism by immersion<\/strong>, as originally practiced. Those wishing to receive the sacrament (catechumens) entered through a small, low door to the left of the present-day entrance. Once baptized, they exited through a larger door on the right, and had access to the cathedral&#8217;s sacred space.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Fr&#xE9;jus\/n-XwqvJP\/Cath&#xE9;drale-de-Fr&#xE9;jus\/i-vRvx6T8\/0\/4WQxj3H6Wtrhg3XDr63vPwDZDm578G4gCvf8D9FW\/L\/baptistere-cathedrale-frejus-L.jpg\" alt=\"Baptistery of Fr&#xE9;jus Cathedral\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br\/>The narthex between profane and sacred<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The narthex is an interior portico found at the entrance to some medieval churches. It&#8217;s also an <strong>intermediary space<\/strong> between the outside (the profane) and the inside (the sacred). The one in Fr\u00e9jus cathedral struck us as particularly solemn. It immerses visitors in an atmosphere of peace and contemplation.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Fr&#xE9;jus\/n-XwqvJP\/Cath&#xE9;drale-de-Fr&#xE9;jus\/i-NHTTKGn\/0\/C8KV4SnLMFFdgWSFqpGM8fHz8zhxB9rwtPmBhr3r9\/L\/narthex-cathedrale-frejus-L.jpg\" alt=\"Narthex of Fr&#xE9;jus Cathedral\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is framed by four gigantic pillars that support the weight of the bell tower. Here you can see the <strong>markings of the stonemasons<\/strong> who marked the blocks to earn their pay by the piece. The narhex also offers remakable paintings such as <em>The Donation of the Rosary<\/em>, an 18th-century work.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Fr&#xE9;jus\/n-XwqvJP\/Cath&#xE9;drale-de-Fr&#xE9;jus\/i-5LG295x\/0\/FBKJgPXjb65v267ptDkGFWdRcpqdjF3LhNvjTPr8n\/L\/nef-cathedrale-frejus-L.jpg\" alt=\"the donation of the rosary, Fr&#xE9;jus cathedral\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The rosary donation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">End of visit: the 2 naves of the double cathedral<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once past the narthex, visitors finally enter the cathedral&#8217;s double nave, first that of Notre-Dame Church, then, on the left, that of St. Stephen&#8217;s Church. We began our tour with the latter, before returning to the Notre-Dame nave.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Fr&#xE9;jus\/n-XwqvJP\/Cath&#xE9;drale-de-Fr&#xE9;jus\/i-gfc4sXp\/0\/D9nfjx48rrrn3TjdkxFrkdjcJzHkvNKQtGBHZBfWd\/L\/nef-notre-dame-cathedrale-frejus-L.jpg\" alt=\"Overview of the Notre-Dame nave from the entrance to Fr&#xE9;jus Cathedral\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Under the 6 barrel vaults of St. Stephen&#8217;s Church<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among all the treasures to be found in the nave of Saint-\u00c9tienne, we really enjoyed the story told by the carved stone in the <strong>tomb of Barth\u00e9l\u00e9my and Pierre Camelin<\/strong>. It dates from the 18th century. Both were bishops of Fr\u00e9jus. They came from a family of Italian merchants established in Fr\u00e9jus at the dawn of the 16th century.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Fr&#xE9;jus\/n-XwqvJP\/Cath&#xE9;drale-de-Fr&#xE9;jus\/i-93ttFxD\/0\/dtGjmr2xFs974vzKT8zPhcPTwJPpPgWxtDj4379S\/L\/tombeau-camelin-cathedrale-frejus-L.jpg\" alt=\"Camelin tomb, Fr&#xE9;jus cathedral\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right next to their tomb, the Baroque altarpiece painting of the imploration shows <strong>Saint F\u00e9lix, Saint L\u00e9once and Saint Etienne imploring the Holy Trinity<\/strong> for the town of Fr\u00e9jus.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Fr&#xE9;jus\/n-XwqvJP\/Cath&#xE9;drale-de-Fr&#xE9;jus\/i-FBwvLsX\/0\/FQgQGjqBzKTfBc9KkRb4xNP5R7xSXzTM5k3pT8GKd\/L\/autel-nef-cathedrale-frejus-L.jpg\" alt=\"Baroque altarpiece of the imploration in Fr&#xE9;jus cathedral\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We then passed the famous <strong>altarpiece of St. Margaret<\/strong>, one of our favorite moments of the visit. It is attributed to 15th-century Nice artist Jacopo Durandi. Marguerite d&#8217;Antioche (since this is who we&#8217;re talking about) brings protection to pregnant women and those suffering from kidney problems.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Fr&#xE9;jus\/n-XwqvJP\/Cath&#xE9;drale-de-Fr&#xE9;jus\/i-dn4FrRx\/0\/FNpctgzX6D7Z8kV8jTwZPtMMXRCq5d5KdvmNFsWNT\/L\/retable-durandi-cathedrale-frejus-L.jpg\" alt=\"The Sainte-Marguerite altarpiece in Saint-L&#xE9;once Cathedral, Fr&#xE9;jus\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the far end of the nave of Saint-\u00c9tienne, we lingered in the intimate space of the <strong>Chapelle du Saint Sacrement<\/strong>. We liked its contemporary stained glass windows, which contrast with the baroque spirit of the altar.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Fr&#xE9;jus\/n-XwqvJP\/Cath&#xE9;drale-de-Fr&#xE9;jus\/i-Kq5SVwD\/0\/FMrm8hzrdgDdwMDTZVRsL6wdqMBDLP5mxT5k4cC8h\/L\/chapelle-saint-sacrement-cathedrale-frejus-L.jpg\" alt=\"Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament in Fr&#xE9;jus Cathedral\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Under the 3 pointed arches of Notre-Dame Church<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We then moved on to the Notre-Dame nave. The<strong>semi-circular vaulted apse<\/strong>, in the so-called &#8220;cul-de-four&#8221; style, is clad in wood and decorated with stalls. The altar is of recent manufacture. It is made of green-hued Serpentine stone and bronze.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Fr&#xE9;jus\/n-XwqvJP\/Cath&#xE9;drale-de-Fr&#xE9;jus\/i-9Dtv9dP\/0\/FPFhdnfDN3FhBfL4BzKgkPS5nczzthbW7CxVrPrGB\/L\/autel-notre-dame-cathedrale-frejus-L.jpg\" alt=\"Apse altar in Fr&#xE9;jus cathedral\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most spectacular feature of this Romanesque nave is undoubtedly <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>magnificent<\/strong> <strong>organ<\/strong> enthroned in its center. It is of recent manufacture. Inaugurated in 1991, it is the work of Pascal Quoirin, the organ builder involved in the restoration of the Great Organ of Notre-Dame-de-Paris, which was spared the fire of 2019. Saturno was a painter of Roman origin. He was active in Provence from 1561 to 1576, working mainly for the Archbishop of Aix-en-Provence. The painting was listed as a historic monument in 1907.
