Inspired by gardens around the world, each has its own distinct style and ambience, overlooking the Mediterranean.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>panoramic view from the<\/strong> first-floor <strong>terrace-loggia<\/strong> is simply breathtaking. It allows you to embrace the magnificence of the area from a single vantage point: the gardens, Cap Ferrat and, beyond, the Baie de Beaulieu and the Baie de Villefranche. A marvel!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inside, we were delighted by <strong>the small salon on the first floor<\/strong>. Its 2 alcoves, ideal for conversation, are decorated with 18th-century tapestries from the Manufacture des Gobelins. It was built between 1905 and 1912 by B\u00e9atrice Ephrussi de Rothschild, a wealthy heiress with a passion for art. We were very interested in the life story of this exceptional woman.  <\/p>\n\n<p>The refined decoration of the villa and the elegant layout of its 9 gardens bear witness to the exquisite taste of the owner. On her death in 1934, she bequeathed the villa to <strong>the Acad\u00e9mie des Beaux-arts of the Institut de France<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Today, the estate is open to the public (since 1938). It offered us an immersive experience of the glitz and luxury of <strong>Belle \u00c9poque<\/strong> high society, not to mention an exceptional panorama of the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The villa and its gardens have been listed as <strong>Historic Monuments<\/strong> since 1996. The villa is vast and rich, and the gardens extend over 7 hectares.<\/p>\n\n<p>While the villa is accessible to people with reduced mobility, some staircases and passages in the gardens are not. After exploring the <strong>patio<\/strong>, we began our tour with the <strong>porcelain salon<\/strong> and <strong>private apartments<\/strong>. Following the official route is easy. Its architectural elegance captivated us.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>The entrance facade<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>The north facade is the first to be seen as you enter the site. Its pink decor, inspired by <strong>Venetian palaces<\/strong>, is immediately striking. On the left, a stair tower with yellow rendering and whimsical construction, openworked with high windows, provides transparency and contrast.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cap-Ferrat\/n-h4Cmfv\/Villa-Ephrussi\/i-Z2mNXng\/0\/cd5ef26f\/L\/facade-nord-villa-ephrussi-rothschild-cap-ferrat-L.jpg\" alt=\"North facade of the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>But it&#8217;s the<strong> flamboyant Gothic<\/strong> entrance porch that really stands out. We couldn&#8217;t see the projecting staircase on its right. Advertised as being in the purest <strong>Florentine Renaissance<\/strong> style, it was being restored at the time of our visit.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cap-Ferrat\/n-h4Cmfv\/Villa-Ephrussi\/i-shBf39f\/0\/1632c9f7\/L\/facade-nord-detail-villa-ephrussi-rothschild-cap-ferrat-L.jpg\" alt=\"North facade (detail) of the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>The splendor of the patio<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>The <strong>patio<\/strong> is a reception area typical of <strong>Italian Renaissance villas<\/strong>. It is a blend of many Italian references: Venetian, Florentine, Lombard&#8230; All around the patio, the gallery&#8217;s vaulted ceilings are decorated with a delicate <strong>15th-century<\/strong> motif chosen by B\u00e9atrice Ephrussi from a Milanese church. We were seduced by its delicacy.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cap-Ferrat\/n-h4Cmfv\/Villa-Ephrussi\/i-PMWKsK2\/0\/fd4e0b61\/L\/patio-villa-ephrussi-rothschild-cap-ferrat-L.jpg\" alt=\"Patio at the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Other elements from churches and convents can be found in the patio. The openwork masonry <strong>railings<\/strong> on the second floor are faithful copies of the grille in the heart of the Church of the Miracles in Venice. We loved imagining the trompe-l&#8217;oeil sky that originally appeared on the ceiling.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A French-style layout<\/h3>\n\n<p>From the patio, we reached Baroness Ephrussi&#8217;s private apartments via the <strong>porcelain salon<\/strong> and <strong>bathroom<\/strong>. We were able to instantly grasp the degree of refinement she has brought to the space, which is fully reflected in her apartments.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>B\u00e9atrice Ephrussi&#8217;s private apartments<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Facing sunset, the room&#8217;s rotunda overlooks the Bay of Villefranche. Every item of furniture and every object is carefully selected. Like most of the great collectors of the 1910s, B\u00e9atrice Ephrussi de Rothschild loved the <strong>18th century<\/strong>. But she has added her own personal touch.<\/p>\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t miss the finesse of the large oval carpet. <strong>Manufactured at Aubusson<\/strong>, it dates from the end of the reign of <strong>Louis XVI<\/strong>. It symbolizes the Rothschilds&#8217; commercial ties with China.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cap-Ferrat\/n-h4Cmfv\/Villa-Ephrussi\/i-KtGTZRq\/0\/d25c6493\/L\/lit-appartement-prive-villa-ephrussi-rothschild-cap-ferrat-L.jpg\" alt=\"Venetian bed by B&#xE9;atrice Ephrussi at the Villa Ephrussi de Rothchild in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat  \"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>The ceremonial salons<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>These are the villa&#8217;s reception rooms. They are architectural and decorative gems that bear witness to the elegance and refinement of both the lady of the house and the Riviera at the beginning of the 20th century.<\/p>\n\n<p>We particularly liked <strong>the small lounge<\/strong>. We loved the intimacy of this room, bathed in light thanks to its high windows overlooking the garden. It was reserved for after-dinner conversations, as evidenced by its 2 alcoves, decorated with <strong>18th-century tapestries by <strong>Manufacture des Gobelins<\/strong><\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cap-Ferrat\/n-h4Cmfv\/Villa-Ephrussi\/i-48Zwh6q\/0\/704d15e3\/L\/alcove-petit-salon-villa-ephrussi-rothschild-cap-ferrat-L.jpg\" alt=\"Alcove in the living room of the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>There are also 3 paintings from <strong>Fran\u00e7ois Boucher<\/strong> &#8216;s studio, including <em>Le sommeil de V\u00e9nus<\/em> (visible in the photo). It&#8217;s easy to imagine the receptions and games tables of the time, reminiscent of the Versailles lifestyle in <strong>Marie-Antoinette<\/strong>&#8216;s day.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cap-Ferrat\/n-h4Cmfv\/Villa-Ephrussi\/i-DGGsrgJ\/0\/101ee2b3\/L\/grand-salon-villa-ephrussi-rothschild-cap-ferrat-L.jpg\" alt=\"Alcove in the living room of the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>One of the carpets comes from the <strong>Chateau de Versailles<\/strong>. It bears 2 large golden Ls and was made for Louis XV by the <strong>Manufacture Royale de la Savonnerie<\/strong>. Here again, we appreciated the elegant decor. It confirms the Baroness&#8217;s constant concern to surround herself with the finest objects.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cap-Ferrat\/n-h4Cmfv\/Villa-Ephrussi\/i-5KNGqGh\/0\/97dc94bb\/L\/coursive-patio-villa-ephrussi-rothschild-cap-ferrat-L.jpg\" alt=\"Patio passageway at the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat&#10;\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From the Directoire bedroom to the monkey salon<\/h3>\n\n<p><strong>The Directoire bedroom<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>This was the first room on the floor we visited. A simple bed and a more discreet elegance, typical of the aftermath of the <strong>French Revolution<\/strong>. The &#8221; <strong>grotesque<\/strong>&#8221; motifs on the woodwork caught our eye in particular.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cap-Ferrat\/n-h4Cmfv\/Villa-Ephrussi\/i-ZJn2Qhs\/0\/4afbf608\/L\/chambre%20-directoire-villa-ephrussi-rothschild-cap-ferrat-L.jpg\" alt=\"Chambre Directoire in the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>Successive trade shows<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>The second floor also features several salons, including the <strong>salon des putti<\/strong>, where the film <em>B\u00e9atrice et l&#8217;\u00e2ge d&#8217;or de la Riviera<\/em> is shown, and the <strong>salon des porcelaines de Meissen<\/strong>. But it was the <strong>Tapestry Room<\/strong> and the <strong>Monkey Room<\/strong> that really caught our interest.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>The tapestry room<\/strong>, as its name suggests, houses 3 large tapestries, one of which measures almost 20m2. It comes from the <strong>Manufacture Royale des Gobelins<\/strong> and was not visible during our visit. The others feature pastoral and gallant scenes by<strong> Fran\u00e7ois Boucher<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cap-Ferrat\/n-h4Cmfv\/Villa-Ephrussi\/i-skj6HDc\/0\/a6c3dac1\/L\/salon-tapisseries-villa-ephrussi-rothschild-cap-ferrat-L.jpg\" alt=\"Salon des tapisseries, Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>The monkey show<\/strong> was a lot of fun. The woodwork is decorated with monkey images. It opens onto the gardens and beyond, onto the entire Cap-Ferrat peninsula and the Baie de Beaulieu and Baie de Villefranche.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cap-Ferrat\/n-h4Cmfv\/Villa-Ephrussi\/i-q5cHjNk\/0\/1ce0ef69\/L\/loggia-villa-ephrussi-rothschild-cap-ferrat-L.jpg\" alt=\"Terrace-loggia, Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The loggia is embellished with beautiful wrought-iron fittings.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>The blue room<\/strong> completes our tour of the second floor. It was one of those intended for guests. We loved its 3 large windows and peaceful, refined atmosphere. The 18th-century chandelier is made from a cage set with porcelain flowers. B\u00e9atrice Ephrussi had a porcelain bird placed there.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cap-Ferrat\/n-h4Cmfv\/Villa-Ephrussi\/i-xKL2QJd\/0\/16df78d1\/L\/chambre-bleue-villa-ephrussi-rothschild-cap-ferrat-L.jpg\" alt=\"Blue Room, Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Continuing the tour: to the east, the Mediterranean gardens<\/h2>\n\n<p>In front of the villa, on the south side, <strong>the perspective of the formal garden<\/strong> is the first to emerge. You then enter the Provencal garden, before reaching the rose garden, as if suspended above the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The French garden<\/h3>\n\n<p><strong>A garden like the deck of a ship<\/strong>. This is how B\u00e9atrice Ephrussi wanted it, on the Cap Ferrat hillside, facing the sea. From the terrace-loggia, we could verify its perfect symmetry: straight paths, carefully arranged flowerbeds, precisely trimmed hedges.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cap-Ferrat\/n-h4Cmfv\/Villa-Ephrussi\/i-rtXkx7K\/0\/1d6b491e\/L\/vue-jardin-terrasse-villa-ephrussi_cap-ferrat-L.jpg\" alt=\"Panoramic view from the terrace over the formal gardens of the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Cleverly arranged ornaments complete the garden&#8217;s composition. They are typical of the classic French garden style of the 17th and 18th centuries. We admired the fire pots and large vases, the canal and ponds, the temples and water fountains&#8230;  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cap-Ferrat\/n-h4Cmfv\/Villa-Ephrussi\/i-Trgsj2X\/0\/14eacdb9\/L\/vue-sud-jardin-francaise-villa-ephrussi-rothschild-cap-ferrat-L.jpg\" alt=\"Jet pool at the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>Huge trees, some over a hundred years old<\/strong>, surround the garden&#8217;s parterre. We have selected Aleppo pines, olive trees, cypress hedges&#8230; But it was the gigantic <strong>fig tree in Moreton Bay<\/strong>, on the right-hand side of the basin, that most captivated us. A real treat.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cap-Ferrat\/n-h4Cmfv\/Villa-Ephrussi\/i-nBkVF82\/0\/e449f181\/L\/jardin-provencal-villa-ephrussi-rothschild-cap-ferrat-L.jpg\" alt=\"Provencal garden at the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>The old-world charm of the rose garden<\/strong> offers a romantic, peaceful setting overlooking the Bay of Villefranche. However, our late summer visit was not the right time to enjoy the wonders of this garden of many varieties. Flowering is best admired in May, June and July.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cap-Ferrat\/n-h4Cmfv\/Villa-Ephrussi\/i-PQG2PVL\/0\/678620b1\/L\/roseraie-jardin-villa-ephrussi_cap-ferrat-L.jpg\" alt=\"Rose garden of the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">End of visit: to the west, gardens of the world<\/h2>\n\n<p>Back at the villa, we walked along the west side of the estate through a succession of gardens inspired by the world, each more enchanting than the last.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Mexican garden to lapidary garden<\/h3>\n\n<p><strong>The exoticism of the Mexican garden<\/strong> won us over. It is also known as an exotic garden, although it was originally inspired by Mexican landscapes. We loved the trails winding through spectacular cactus and prickly pear trees, towering agaves and fascinatingly shaped succulents.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cap-Ferrat\/n-h4Cmfv\/Villa-Ephrussi\/i-TtsphtF\/0\/64815206\/L\/jardin-exotique-villa-ephrussi-rothschild-cap-ferrat-L.jpg\" alt=\"Exotic garden at the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>We were intrigued by <strong>the strangeness of the lapidary garden<\/strong>. Access is via the <strong>Japanese garden<\/strong>. It&#8217;s a small enclosed garden displaying ancient architectural elements (bas-reliefs, gargoyles, columns, capitals, etc.) from various eras and regions. The atmosphere is one of romantic ruins, perfect for daydreaming.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cap-Ferrat\/n-h4Cmfv\/Villa-Ephrussi\/i-BLdj4hg\/0\/07b067c3\/L\/jardin-lapidaire-villa-ephrussi-rothschild-cap-ferrat-L.jpg\" alt=\"Lapidary garden of the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gardens of Europe<\/h3>\n\n<p><strong>The intimacy of the Florentine garden<\/strong> can be felt from the first steps along its cypress-lined paths. Everywhere, little nooks and crannies, secret staircases, cascading terraces and elegant fountains. questions<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who was B\u00e9atrice Ephrussi de Rothschild?<\/h3>\n\n<p>B\u00e9atrice Ephrussi de Rothschild was an <strong>emblematic figure<\/strong> of early 20th-century high society. Born in 1864 into a banking family, she married Maurice Ephrussi, a wealthy businessman, in 1883. They separated in 1904.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Passionate about art, culture and gardening<\/strong>, B\u00e9atrice is known for her exquisite taste, philanthropy and patronage. She devoted a large part of her life to the construction of the villa, which lasted 7 years (1905-1912) and in which she spent very little time.<\/p>\n\n<p>Suffering from tuberculosis, she retired to Switzerland, where she died in 1934. She bequeaths the villa and its gardens to <strong>the Acad\u00e9mie des Beaux-Arts of the Institut de France<\/strong>.
