Both a reconstruction of an ancient Greek dwelling and an original creation. We loved visiting this place!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This house was <strong>built between 1902 and 1908<\/strong> on a rocky promontory overlooking the Mediterranean.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This creation was the brainchild of<strong>archaeologist and patron Th\u00e9odore Reinach<\/strong>. He wanted to create a place where visitors could discover the <strong>daily life of the ancient Greeks<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Beaulieu-sur-Mer\/n-kwnx6C\/Villa-Kerylos\/i-xPR9P23\/0\/5746596f\/L\/Villa_Kerylos_Beaulieu-sur_mer-14-L.jpg\" alt=\"PLafon at Villa K&#xE9;rylos\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We learned that it took <strong>6 years<\/strong> to <strong>build<\/strong>. It was designed by<strong>architect Emmanuel Pontremol<\/strong> with exceptional attention to authenticity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The villa combines the <strong>luxury of ancient Greece with modern comforts<\/strong>. Elements such as mosaics, frescoes and sculptures are combined with the comfort of electricity, running water and heating.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We were very surprised to learn that this place was <strong>inhabited <\/strong>by its owner and his family <strong>until 1966<\/strong>. The peristyle, the essential foundation of an antique house. We found the <strong>12 columns of<\/strong> white Carrara <strong>marble<\/strong> (Italy) that surround it very elegant.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Beaulieu-sur-Mer\/n-kwnx6C\/Villa-Kerylos\/i-MVrLqjw\/0\/20f88ed7\/L\/Villa_Kerylos_Beaulieu-sur_mer-15-L.jpg\" alt=\"Villa Kerylos peristyle\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Have you noticed the impressive <strong>frescoes<\/strong> on the walls? They were created by painters Gustave-Louis Jaulmes and Adrien Karbowsky. Do you, like us, not know where to put your eyes because there are so many things to admire?<\/p>\n\n<p>The Andron was an <strong>important place<\/strong> in the ancient Greek home. It was <strong>reserved for men<\/strong>. They gathered there for <strong>social and recreational activities<\/strong>, such as banquets and philosophical discussions.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Beaulieu-sur-Mer\/n-kwnx6C\/Villa-Kerylos\/i-Qb8pQm4\/0\/1f65b1c4\/L\/Villa_Kerylos_Beaulieu-sur_mer-20-L.jpg\" alt=\"Andron from Villa K&#xE9;rylos\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The walls of the Andron at Villa K\u00e9rylos are clad in <strong>mauve marble<\/strong> from Serravezza (Italy), with inlaid yellow marble medallions from Siena.<\/p>\n\n<p>The floor is covered with a <strong>mosaic <\/strong>depicting<strong> the<\/strong> Greek hero<strong> Theseus<\/strong> <strong>defeating the Minotaur<\/strong>, a monster that terrorized the city of Crete. We found this mosaic exceptional.<\/p>\n\n<p>We were blown away by the teak <strong>wood coffered ceiling<\/strong>, richly decorated with motifs inspired by Greek mythology and nature.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Beaulieu-sur-Mer\/n-kwnx6C\/Villa-Kerylos\/i-56TNFk5\/0\/5e04945c\/L\/Villa_Kerylos_Beaulieu-sur_mer-28-L.jpg\" alt=\"Villa K&#xE9;rylos andron ceiling\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>O\u00efkos<\/em>, the arts and Dionysus in the spotlight<\/h3>\n\n<p>The<em>O\u00efkos<\/em> at Villa K\u00e9rylos is a <strong>salon dedicated to the arts and to Dionysus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The floor features a <strong>mosaic<\/strong> depicting silenes, fauns and satyrs &#8211; creatures of nature, often associated with the god Dionysus &#8211; harvesting grapes.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Beaulieu-sur-Mer\/n-kwnx6C\/Villa-Kerylos\/i-rS7hQrM\/0\/ae7c691a\/L\/Villa_Kerylos_Beaulieu-sur_mer-29-L.jpg\" alt=\"Mosaic at Villa Kerylos\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Look up to admire the walls. You can see a <strong>stucco frieze<\/strong> depicting musical instruments and masks. This detail reminds us of the importance of theater to the Greeks.<\/p>\n\n<p>The centerpiece of the<em>O\u00efkos<\/em> furniture is the <strong>piano<\/strong>. We found it very surprising! It is foldable and concealed in a sideboard. It was produced by Maison Pleyel.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Beaulieu-sur-Mer\/n-kwnx6C\/Villa-Kerylos\/i-c8Zq7hd\/0\/d1726214\/L\/Villa_Kerylos_Beaulieu-sur_mer-30-L.jpg\" alt=\"Villa K&#xE9;rylos fresco\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The second floor: refuge and privacy<\/h2>\n\n<p>Our tour continues on the second floor of the villa. This part of the house is dedicated to privacy and rest.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Beaulieu-sur-Mer\/n-kwnx6C\/Villa-Kerylos\/i-4zVTtwT\/0\/13c530b9\/L\/Villa_Kerylos_Beaulieu-sur_mer-31-L.jpg\" alt=\"Sea view from a window in the Villa K&#xE9;rylos\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>We enjoyed immersing ourselves in the daily life of an ancient Greek house during our visit. You will find:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hermes&#8217; vestibule<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Ornith\u00e8s<\/em> (meaning &#8220;birds&#8221;), Madame Reinach&#8217;s bedroom<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>L&#8217;<em>Ampelos<\/em> (meaning &#8220;the vine&#8221;), Madame Reinach&#8217;s bathroom<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LeTriptol\u00e8me, lounge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Erot\u00e8s, Theodore Reinach&#8217;s room dedicated to Eros<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Nikai<\/em> (meaning &#8220;victories&#8221;), Theodore Reinach&#8217;s bathroom<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Here are the rooms that impressed us most during our visit to the second floor.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">L&#8217;<em>Ornith\u00e8s<\/em>: Madame Reinach&#8217;s bedroom<\/h3>\n\n<p>We learned that<em>Ornith\u00e8s<\/em>, the name given to this room, means &#8220;birds&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n<p>In this room, the<strong> frescoes<\/strong> depict the goddess Hera. She is designated as the protector of women and the goddess of marriage, guardian of the couple&#8217;s fertility and of women in childbirth.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Beaulieu-sur-Mer\/n-kwnx6C\/Villa-Kerylos\/i-dPj9cRV\/0\/12ae1c7a\/L\/Villa_Kerylos_Beaulieu-sur_mer-32-L.jpg\" alt=\"Ornith&#xE8;s room at Villa K&#xE9;rylos\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>On the floor, admire the <strong>mosaic<\/strong> with its beautiful nature motifs.<\/p>\n\n<p>We found this room welcoming. The materials and colors are soothing and comforting.<\/p>\n\n<p>However, there&#8217;s another reason why we&#8217;ve chosen to present it to you. Did you notice the <strong>magnificent adjoining shower<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n<p>This is an impressive and <strong>particularly sophisticated antique model<\/strong>, with 3 types of jets: kataxysma (rain shower), krounos (running water) and perikyklas (circular shower). In our opinion, a shower worthy of the finest hotels!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Beaulieu-sur-Mer\/n-kwnx6C\/Villa-Kerylos\/i-hjpdgRG\/0\/9fef51df\/L\/Villa_Kerylos_Beaulieu-sur_mer-33-L.jpg\" alt=\"Antique shower at Villa Kerylos\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Le Triptol\u00e8me<\/h3>\n\n<p>This room is a <strong>lounge<\/strong> linking Th\u00e9odore Reinach&#8217;s apartments to those of his wife.<br\/>Did you notice the <strong>ceiling<\/strong>? We found it magnificent with its red and black coffers, decorated with gilded doves and ivy wreaths.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Beaulieu-sur-Mer\/n-kwnx6C\/Villa-Kerylos\/i-BRrdNtF\/0\/f75cd124\/L\/Villa_Kerylos_Beaulieu-sur_mer-34-L.jpg\" alt=\"Triptol&#xE8;me ceiling at Villa K&#xE9;rylos\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The <strong>mosaic<\/strong> on the floor illustrates the legend of Triptoleme.  <\/p>\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve learned that in Greek mythology, Triptolemus is an important hero. He is considered the founder of agriculture and the cult of Demeter.<\/p>\n\n<p>We really enjoyed this legend, a story of hope and rebirth. It tells the story of how agriculture has enabled people to survive and prosper. It&#8217;s also about passing on knowledge and culture.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Beaulieu-sur-Mer\/n-kwnx6C\/Villa-Kerylos\/i-tSMmT5R\/0\/639bc0c7\/L\/Villa_Kerylos_Beaulieu-sur_mer-35-L.jpg\" alt=\"Floor mosaic of the Triptol&#xE8;me at Villa K&#xE9;rylos\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Antiques Gallery: casts, vases and statues<\/h2>\n\n<p><strong>Art and history<\/strong> lovers? For example, the <strong>Venus de Milo<\/strong>, the Medici Vase and the Venus Genitrix.  <br\/>We have found that in the grounds of Villa K\u00e9rylos, these works seem to be in their natural environment.<\/p>\n\n<p>The basement used to be the kitchen area. Would you have guessed it?<\/p>\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll also discover <strong>objects that once belonged to the Reinach family<\/strong>.
