Enjoy the ferry or private boat trip<\/h2>\n\n<p>Even before arriving on the island, you&#8217;ll enjoy the experience of crossing.<br\/>We really enjoyed taking the sea shuttle. The walk is relatively short, but the scenery is splendid.<br\/>It starts with the exit from the old port. We watched the Ch\u00e2teau de la Castre in the distance, home to the <a href=\"https:\/\/provencelovers.fr\/en\/visit-museum-explorations-monde-chateau-castre-cannes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Museum of World Explorations<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/n-cSNNdV\/&#xCE;le-Sainte-Marguerite\/i-pTRm3Wr\/0\/505360c9\/L\/ferry%20ile%20sainte%20marguerite%20cannes-1-L.jpg\" alt=\"Cannes harbour exit\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The ferry takes you to the island in just 15 minutes. Once out of the harbor, we enjoyed magnificent views of Cannes on one side, and the \u00celes de L\u00e9rins on the other. They got progressively bigger as we got closer. Admire Fort Royal &#8211; a must-see on \u00cele Sainte-Marguerite<\/h2>\n\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve arrived at the island&#8217;s landing stage, you&#8217;ll need to walk 500m (uphill) to reach Fort Royal. Listed as a historic monument, this site is a must-see when visiting the island! It houses the Iron Mask Museum. Walking towards the fortifications, we discovered superb views of the ramparts facing the sea.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/Mus&#xE9;es\/n-vwZGDH\/Mus&#xE9;e-masque-du-fer\/i-VvMg7vd\/0\/6bb3b447\/L\/musee%20masque%20fer%20ile%20sainte%20marguerite%20cannes-L.jpg\" alt=\"Fort Royal\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The island&#8217;s history is marked by the mysterious legend of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cannes-france.com\/decouvrir-visiter\/iles-de-lerins\/sainte-marguerite\/homme-au-masque-de-fer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Man<\/a> in the Iron Mask, who was imprisoned in Fort Royal for 11 long years. Disembarked on the island in 1687, he was locked up in a cell designed expressly for him under the orders of King Louis XIV. He was forced to wear an iron mask until his death in 1703. His identity remains a mystery to this day, even if historians have a few clues! At present, it is possible to visit his cell.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/Mus&#xE9;es\/n-vwZGDH\/Mus&#xE9;e-masque-du-fer\/i-wx9hxfC\/0\/91f839f1\/L\/fort%20royal%20ile%20sainte%20marguerite%20cannes-L.jpg\" alt=\"Fort Royal\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>To reach the fort, you&#8217;ll need to climb 60 steps or take a 350m-long gently sloping path. This road is suitable for people with reduced mobility, but be aware that the cobbled surface has a lot of relief.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/n-cSNNdV\/&#xCE;le-Sainte-Marguerite\/i-9TBQVkX\/0\/bf67eaef\/L\/escaliers%20ile%20sainte%20marguerite%20cannes-L.jpg\" alt=\"stairs\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Visit the Iron Mask Museum (Mus\u00e9e de la Mer)<\/h2>\n\n<p>Formerly known as the Mus\u00e9e de la Mer, it exhibits collections of regional underwater and terrestrial archaeology. In keeping with the myth of the Man in the Iron Mask, the museum also houses a collection relating to his captivity and intriguing existence. Learn more about the theories and speculations surrounding the identity of this mysterious individual, one of the most famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.fr\/histoire\/qui-etait-vraiment-lhomme-au-masque-de-fer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">enigmas<\/a> in French history!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/Mus&#xE9;es\/n-vwZGDH\/Mus&#xE9;e-masque-du-fer\/i-pCRNthm\/0\/85daf598\/L\/Cannes_Musee_masque_fer_fort_Royal_musee_mer-L.jpg\" alt=\"Iron Mask Museum\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The museum also offers information on the maritime history of \u00cele Sainte-Marguerite and the region. We loved exploring the fort, which is an impressive example of military architecture, while discovering the fascinating legend of the Iron Mask!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/Mus&#xE9;es\/n-vwZGDH\/Mus&#xE9;e-masque-du-fer\/i-2KSFT9K\/0\/d3946498\/L\/musee%20masque%20fer%20fort%20royal%20cannes-L.jpg\" alt=\"museum\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Beyond the museum&#8217;s collection, you&#8217;ll enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the island and the Bay of Cannes on the horizon. Hiking around the island<\/h2>\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re a keen hiker, you&#8217;ll love the Chemin de Ceinture, which circles the entire island. It winds along the seafront, offering incredible views of the Bay of Cannes and neighboring<a href=\"https:\/\/provencelovers.fr\/en\/visit-island-saint-honorat-cannes-things-to-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00cele Saint-Honorat<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/n-cSNNdV\/&#xCE;le-Sainte-Marguerite\/i-c5S5tcV\/0\/cc46a102\/L\/chemin%20ceinture%20ile%20sainte%20marguerite%20cannes-L.jpg\" alt=\"belt path\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>We had no trouble finding our way around. You&#8217;ll find plenty of information panels as you go along. The soil is a mixture of earth, pebbles and tree roots. Watch where you put your feet to avoid tripping.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/n-cSNNdV\/&#xCE;le-Sainte-Marguerite\/i-m8CNxD4\/0\/83cd09b0\/L\/sentier%20ile%20sainte%20marguerite%20cannes-L.jpg\" alt=\"view of the ring road\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The hike is relatively flat. You&#8217;ll encounter some gentle gradients, and the climb to Fort Royal is more marked. We were charmed by the different landscapes of the island, especially the northern part. We watched the environment evolve around us. Between the tall, wind-blown pines, the rocks firmly anchored in the water and the \u00c9tang de Bat\u00e9guier, the island is full of surprises!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" The island&#8217;s beaches and coves are very rocky. We recommend that you bring water shoes with you, to avoid hurting your feet.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plage des Pierres Hautes<\/h3>\n\n<p>Located in the south-east of the island, Plage des Pierres Hautes is a popular spot for sunbathing. We advise you to be well equipped if you wish to relax here. There&#8217;s no sand, only rock.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/n-cSNNdV\/&#xCE;le-Sainte-Marguerite\/i-zv8DVvx\/0\/c6398239\/L\/plage%20ile%20sainte%20marguerite%20cannes-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"Plage des Pierres Hautes\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>We found this place calm and rejuvenating. The water was completely transparent, and the rocks very organic. So, are you ready to take a dip? Watch the ground before you step on it!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/n-cSNNdV\/&#xCE;le-Sainte-Marguerite\/i-Hq4C49Z\/0\/359367c2\/L\/roche%20ile%20sainte%20marguerite%20cannes-3-L.jpg\" alt=\"Plage des Pierres Hautes\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beach behind \u00c9tang du Bat\u00e9guier<\/h3>\n\n<p>This beach is less crowded than the others, as it is wilder. It hides behind the \u00c9tang du Bat\u00e9guier. The panorama of the Massif de l&#8217;Est\u00e9rel impressed us! The soil is composed of pebbles, cobbles and rocks. Once again, don&#8217;t forget to wear water shoes for added comfort.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/n-cSNNdV\/&#xCE;le-Sainte-Marguerite\/i-swxr6hK\/0\/37b74360\/L\/baignade%20ile%20sainte%20marguerite%20cannes-L.jpg\" alt=\"Beach behind &#xC9;tang du Bat&#xE9;guier\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Criques de la Pointe du Dragon<\/h3>\n\n<p>From the Criques de la Pointe du Dragon, you can enjoy a unique view of \u00cele Saint-Honorat. They are located close to the landing stage. Equip yourself with a mask and snorkel, and set off to discover the island&#8217;s seabed. You can walk along the many rocks that sink into the water. An ideal spot for snorkelling! We were charmed by this landscape of rock and sea.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/n-cSNNdV\/&#xCE;le-Sainte-Marguerite\/i-mmSJdWK\/0\/49a12432\/L\/crique%20ile%20sainte%20marguerite%20cannes-1-L.jpg\" alt=\"Criques de la Pointe du Dragon\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Observe the flora and fauna of \u00c9tang de Bat\u00e9guier<\/h2>\n\n<p>Nestled on the west side of the island, less than 300m from the landing stage, we made our way to \u00c9tang de Bat\u00e9guier. It&#8217;s an ideal place to observe migratory birds: gulls, herons, stilts, nightingales and other species. As we wandered around the island, we discovered numerous signs with information on the local flora and fauna. We really appreciated this approach!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/n-cSNNdV\/&#xCE;le-Sainte-Marguerite\/i-2SHPQfh\/0\/c61c0996\/L\/etang%20bateguier%20ile%20sainte%20marguerite%20cannes-L.jpg\" alt=\"Bat&#xE9;guier pond\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>This bird sanctuary attracts many birds, as well as humans! This little haven of peace is quite different from the rest of the island. We were seduced by the shades of green in the vegetation, the reflection of the trees in the pond water, and the ambiance of the place. What&#8217;s more, it offers a spectacular view of the <a href=\"https:\/\/provencelovers.fr\/en\/best-things-to-do-cote-azur-visit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Massif de l&#8217;Est\u00e9rel<\/a>! The floor is a mixture of twigs and wood shavings.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/n-cSNNdV\/&#xCE;le-Sainte-Marguerite\/i-pkwLMM4\/0\/495882d9\/L\/etang%20ile%20sainte%20marguerite%20cannes-L.jpg\" alt=\"Bat&#xE9;guier pond\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Searching for ball-bearing furnaces<\/h2>\n\n<p>The \u00celes de L\u00e9rins are home to 4 strategically placed cannonball furnaces: 2 on \u00cele Sainte-Marguerite and 2 on \u00cele Saint-Honorat. The 1st is at Pointe du Dragon, and the 2nd at Batterie du Vengeur. You should know that there are only a dozen of this type left in France! Built on the orders of General Bonaparte in 1793, they were used to defend the coast.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/n-cSNNdV\/&#xCE;le-Sainte-Marguerite\/i-2RC9884\/0\/9cb095b1\/L\/four%20boulets%20ile%20sainte%20marguerite%20cannes-L.jpg\" alt=\"  ball furnaces\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>To find the oven you can see in our photo, we took the Chemin de la Batterie. If you decide to continue along this path, you&#8217;ll come to the Convention Battery, at the very eastern end of the island.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/n-cSNNdV\/&#xCE;le-Sainte-Marguerite\/i-R8RGFv8\/0\/89bfd9ca\/L\/batterie%20vengeur%20ile%20sainte%20marguerite%20cannes-L.jpg\" alt=\"  ball furnaces\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Dive to visit Jason de Caires Taylor&#8217;s Underwater Ecomuseum<\/h2>\n\n<p>Are you interested in visiting an extraordinary museum? On the south side of the island, hidden behind the Maison Foresti\u00e8re, you&#8217;ll discover the Jason de Caires <a href=\"https:\/\/www.underwatersculpture.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Taylor<\/a> Underwater Ecomuseum. A renowned sculptor and diver, he has created a series of underwater sculptures installed in various locations around the world. The \u00c9comus\u00e9e de Cannes is an artistic project that combines art and the preservation of the marine environment! We were very impressed by this approach.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/n-cSNNdV\/&#xCE;le-Sainte-Marguerite\/i-j32xZSJ\/0\/e2fbda9c\/L\/ecomusee%20sous%20marin%20ile%20sainte%20marguerite%20cannes-L.jpg\" alt=\"Jason de Caires Taylor underwater ecomuseum\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Beach of the Cannes Underwater Ecomuseum<\/h3>\n\n<p>As you can see, you&#8217;ll need a mask and snorkel to access the works of art! The bathing perimeter is clearly marked with markers. The water is turquoise and perfectly transparent. Now that you&#8217;re all set, it&#8217;s time for a little underwater expedition! The farthest sculpture from the shore is at 132m, and the depth extends to 5m. Don&#8217;t worry, you&#8217;ll find them close to the landing stage. They boast superb sea views. We recommend Snack Le Ler\u00f5nos if you&#8217;re looking for a quick, inexpensive meal.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/n-cSNNdV\/&#xCE;le-Sainte-Marguerite\/i-t56XXsx\/0\/58f592c8\/L\/restaurant%20ile%20sainte%20marguerite%20cannes-L.jpg\" alt=\"restaurants\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>In our opinion, the best option is to bring your own food. Throughout the island, you&#8217;ll find several picnic tables facing the Bay of Cannes. Visit the village<\/h2>\n\n<p>Although the island has only around 20 year-round inhabitants, we recommend a visit to the village. We really enjoyed the narrow, leafy streets! On some portals, we observed hanging anchors. It&#8217;s one of the few places on the island where the ground is paved, which makes walking easier.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/n-cSNNdV\/&#xCE;le-Sainte-Marguerite\/i-qnZ5NzR\/0\/841ebdf1\/L\/maison%20pecheur%20ile%20sainte%20marguerite%20cannes-L.jpg\" alt=\"village\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">12. Search for the Covenant Battery and bunkers<\/h2>\n\n<p>To reach the Convention Battery, you have 4 options:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>via the Chemin de Ceinture to the south of the island on the seafront,  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>by the All\u00e9e du Centre inland,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>by the Convention Road inland,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>via the Chemin de la Batterie on the seafront to the north of the island.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>We opted for the waterfront paths to enjoy the island&#8217;s magnificent scenery while walking.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Cannes\/n-cSNNdV\/&#xCE;le-Sainte-Marguerite\/i-r92nBsv\/0\/09da1109\/L\/bastion%20convention%20ile%20sainte%20marguerite%20cannes-L.jpg\" alt=\"Convention battery\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.3333333333333333;width:702px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Convention battery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>Classified as a historic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pop.culture.gouv.fr\/notice\/merimee\/PA00080695\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">monument<\/a>, the Bastion de la Convention is a military structure erected during the Spanish occupation of the island until 1637. Situated on the western tip of the island, it was strategically located. Along the way, we came across several other bunkers.
