Enjoy the boat trip<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even before you arrive on the island, you&#8217;ll enjoy the experience.<br\/>We really enjoyed the shuttle crossing. Plage Saint-Pierre and Restaurant (at the pontoon)<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the boat arrives on the island, the descent is made onto a pontoon at Calanque Saint-Pierre.<br\/>Here you&#8217;ll find a pebble beach and the island&#8217;s only functional building: Restaurant L&#8217;\u00cele-Verte.<br\/>It&#8217;s a pleasant place with beautiful views. They serve locally caught fish and some meat dishes.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Ile-Verte\/i-NtKqD6v\/0\/f6f7dca1\/L\/ile_verte_plage_Saint_pierre-L.jpg\" alt=\"restaurant de l'&#xEE;le-Verte La Ciotat, plage Saint-Pierre&#10;\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, if you want to enjoy even more beautiful views, and more peace and quiet. Climb the stairs opposite to explore the island.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Ile-Verte\/i-2ddTd7Q\/0\/ae947347\/L\/ile_verte_escalier-L.jpg\" alt=\"staircase  \"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Plageolle cove<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once at the top of the stairs, we headed off to the right and the Plageolle cove.<br\/>There are signs along the way to help you find your way. In our opinion, it&#8217;s a two-way street. We have no preference.<br\/>Turning right, our first stop was the small Calanque La Plageaolle. It deserves its name because it&#8217;s so small.<br\/>As everywhere on the <a href=\"https:\/\/provencelovers.fr\/en\/best-beaches-cote-azur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">C\u00f4te d&#8217;Azur beaches<\/a>, the colors are magnificent.<br\/>We preferred to walk around the island rather than go for a swim, but in our opinion, it&#8217;s definitely one of <a href=\"https:\/\/provencelovers.fr\/en\/best-beaches-la-ciotat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">La Ciotat&#8217;s most beautiful beaches<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Ile-Verte\/i-ZnjGwDT\/0\/350bddc5\/L\/ile_verte_calanque_plageolle-L.jpg\" alt=\"Plageolle cove\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Hike and enjoy the views<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So we resumed our hike. The advantage is that there are lots of trees, and you don&#8217;t have to walk in direct sunlight. Not a common occurrence on the C\u00f4te d&#8217;Azur. In fact, it&#8217;s the only wooded island in the department.<br\/>The southeast coast was our favorite section of the walk, with magnificent views of the rock formations of Cap d&#8217;Aigle, its red colors and strange shapes.<br\/>On several occasions, there are clearings between the trees to enjoy the panorama.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Best-of\/n-PbwqvZ\/Paysages\/i-DfJWbD8\/0\/64b58953\/L\/La_ciotat_ile_verte-L.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Fort Saint-Pierre<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, the path leads to the first historic buildings: Fort Saint-Pierre. It was built in 1705 by Marshal de Tourville to take advantage of the island&#8217;s strategic position. This allows us to control the sea route between Marseille and Toulon.<br\/>During the First and Second World Wars, German troops also occupied the site, carrying out extensive work to install artillery and housing.<br\/>On August 12, 1944, a bombing raid destroyed the structure. Orientation table<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next to the fort is a platform with an orientation table. Don&#8217;t miss it.<br\/>You can see the whole bay of La Ciotat, starting with Cap de l&#8217;Aigle. It&#8217;s always nice to have such a 360\u00b0 panorama (with the sea behind). We could have spent quite some time observing, but we wanted to catch the next ferry back, so we continued on our way.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Ile-Verte\/i-b5c4S6z\/0\/b1b5bb4f\/L\/ile_verte_Fort_Saint_pierre_table_orientation-L.jpg\" alt=\"Orientation table\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Grande-Calanque<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next point of interest is on the south-west coast: Grande-Calanque.<br\/>It&#8217;s impossible to get down here, so we have to make do with several views from above. But it&#8217;s one of the places where you can best appreciate the island&#8217;s geology. Like Cap d&#8217;Aigle, the island is made up of rock known as La Poudingue (a conglomerate of sediments).<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Ile-Verte\/i-SkVLzxq\/0\/75608df5\/L\/ile_verte_grande_Calanque-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"Grande-Calanque\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Fort Gery<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right next to Grande-Clanque, you&#8217;ll find another fort.<br\/>History has it that on September 3, 1808, the English managed to enter La Ciotat&#8217;s harbor, demonstrating its vulnerability. The Model Tower was built in 1811. It was never completed, but its strategic location, visible from the sea, was more or less enough to worry enemies.<br\/>Construction was completed in 1852 and the name was changed to Tour G\u00e9ry.<br\/>In 1943, the Germans moved in and turned the tower into a command post. They reduced it and added a reinforced concrete roof. But the Americans bombed it on August 13, 1944, sending the Germans fleeing.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Ile-Verte\/i-rvv2QQL\/0\/0149373a\/L\/ile_verte_Fort_Gery-L.jpg\" alt=\"Fort Gery\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Isserot cove<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The path then leads to another cove which cannot be entered. In our opinion, it&#8217;s the most beautiful to admire.<br\/>We loved its long shape and the beautiful rocks and colors all around.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Ile-Verte\/i-3T4Nxc5\/0\/ff76f2b2\/L\/ile_verte_calanque_isserot-1-L.jpg\" alt=\"Isserot cove\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. Calanque Seynerolles<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And finally, our last stop before returning to the pontoon is the Seynerolles cove.<br\/>You can start by admiring it from above.<br\/>But a staircase gives access to the water level, and therefore to swimming!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Ile-Verte\/i-LCXWT4w\/0\/a7b724b0\/L\/ile_verte_calanque_seynerolles-L.jpg\" alt=\"Landscapes of &#xCE;le-Verte\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Calanque Seynerolles<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beach is a mixture of rocks, pebbles and sand (and also Posidonia meadows at times, essential for beach formation).<br\/>It&#8217;s a pretty calanque beach, ideal for swimming and snorkeling. For us, it&#8217;s one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/provencelovers.fr\/en\/hidden-gems-cote-azur-secret-places\/\">lesser-known gems of the C\u00f4te d&#8217;Azur<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get there<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From La Ciotat&#8217;s old port, the shuttle makes a regular round trip during the season. 15 min each way. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laciotat-ileverte.com\/horaires-et-tarifs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">See timetable<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best time to visit<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the height of summer, it can get very crowded. We recommend you take one of the first boats in the morning.<br\/>Out of season, it&#8217;s fairly quiet and you can enjoy it all day long.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Ile-Verte\/i-TxhN5SB\/0\/338d35cd\/L\/ile_verte_calanque_chemin-L.jpg\" alt=\"&#xCE;le-Verte hiking trail\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How long and how difficult is the hike?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It takes less than 1 hour to walk around the island if you don&#8217;t go swimming.<br\/>Take good walking shoes. The soil is a mixture of earth, pebbles and tree roots.<br\/>The hike is not flat. There&#8217;s a bit of a climb. But the path is well signposted with blue signs (lines indicate the way, crosses indicate not to go that way).<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Ile-Verte\/i-txHbBwp\/0\/6173c067\/L\/ile_verte_direction-L.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History of \u00cele-Verte<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ceramic remains indicate a human presence since the Neolithic period (-5000 to -4000 BC).<br\/>In ancient times, the bay of La Ciotat was an important maritime hub, so there was a lot of traffic around the island.<br\/>In the Middle Ages and until the 17th century, the island was used as a hunting ground, among other things.<br\/>Then, from the Napoleonic Empire onwards, its strategic position attracted the military.
