We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why visit the Calanque de Figuerolles?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, this cove is well worth a visit.<br\/>It&#8217;s one of the most beautiful in the region, with its orange rock contrasting with the turquoise waters. What&#8217;s more, it&#8217;s within easy walking distance of the city!<br\/>It&#8217;s one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/provencelovers.fr\/en\/best-beaches-cote-azur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most beautiful beaches on the C\u00f4te d&#8217;<\/a>Azur.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Calanque-Figuerolles\/i-9s5MF76\/0\/e2347707\/L\/Calanque_Figuerolles_plage-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"Figuerolles cove beach\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our opinion, the 3 reasons to visit this beach are:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The scenic beauty<\/strong> of this cove formed by erosion over millions of years. The colors are exceptional, as are the shapes of the rocks. It has been painted by artists such as Georges Braque.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The location of<\/strong> the calanque, far from the more popular Cassis and Marseille coves, yet within easy walking distance. It&#8217;s not often that you can see scenery like this with just a 20-minute walk from the old port!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The geological interest of<\/strong> the area to get a closer look at the ochre-colored Poundingue rock.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its name means Fig Tree Garden in Proven\u00e7al. It&#8217;s not very big and fills up pretty quickly. However, the hours of sunrise and sunset make the colors even more beautiful when the low-angled sun hits the ochre rock.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beach type and size<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a beach of small colored pebbles. Colors range from pink to red and from yellow to orange.<br\/>Visually, we think it&#8217;s superb. But if you swim, we recommend you take swimming shoes.<br\/>The back beach is a mix of pebbles and earth, so be sure to add some color to your towels!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Calanque-Figuerolles\/i-SsMtdjM\/0\/ac471ff2\/L\/Calanque_Figuerolles_galets-L.jpg\" alt=\"colored pebbles\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conditions for swimming<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The slope is quite steep, so it&#8217;s not ideal for young children.<br\/>However, it&#8217;s a superb place for swimming and snorkeling.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Facilities and activities<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Monitoring<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beach is not supervised.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Showers, toilets, deckchairs&#8230;<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are no facilities on the beach apart from the restaurant and snack bar. No public toilets, no showers.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Calanque-Figuerolles\/i-zG3XbwB\/0\/9604183a\/L\/Calanque_Figuerolles_plage-1-L.jpg\" alt=\"turquoise water\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shadow<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There aren&#8217;t really any trees to protect you in the middle of the day.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nautical activities<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No equipment rental on site, but you can visit the calanque by kayak (as well as Cap Canaille and \u00cele-Verte) &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/la-ciotat-l95609\/parc-national-des-calanques-excursion-guidee-en-kayak-t396423\/?partner_id=R3GYW4V&amp;cmp=PL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">See program and availability<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Catering<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along the descent to the beach, you can find..:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a snack bar for fast food<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restaurant Calanque de Figuerolles also known as Restaurant Chez Tania &#8211; arrive early or make a reservation as it&#8217;s quite popular. Open for lunch and dinner. Unfortunately, the tables don&#8217;t have the magnificent view of the calanque&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The restaurant also has a small hotel. This is pudding, a sedimentary rock, a conglomerate made up of debris. The ancient pebbles were transported over a long distance by an ancient coastal river.<br\/>The larger the pebble, the greater the speed of the water current that deposited it.<br\/>Some species have adapted to these rocks and even blend in with the scenery, like the little gecko: Hemidactylus Verrucatus. You won&#8217;t see him during the day, but he goes out hunting at night.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Calanque-Figuerolles\/i-KqLs8WP\/0\/f6e0c047\/L\/Calanque_Figuerolles_geologie-L.jpg\" alt=\"pudding rock\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dwarf palms and vegetation<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All around the cove, you can still see some vegetation.<br\/>These include dwarf palms.
