Its elegant sobriety makes it one of the most eye-catching buildings around the port. And you&#8217;ll be surprised by the modern frescoes inside!<br\/>This is one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/provencelovers.fr\/en\/best-things-to-do-la-ciotat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">main places to visit at La Ciotat<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you can see<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The architecture<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Eglise-Notre-Dame-Assomption\/i-RjZBF2K\/0\/da367401\/L\/Eglise_notre_dame_assomption-L.jpg\" alt=\"Church exterior view\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Start by admiring the church from the outside.<br\/>The present church was built between 1603 and 1625. It was in fact an extension to a chapel. But it was modified over the following centuries.<br\/>We were charmed by its simplicity, which honors the beautiful stone used in its construction.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The consular gate<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Eglise-Notre-Dame-Assomption\/i-Dqb9FDP\/0\/acfb7eb4\/L\/Eglise_notre_dame_assomption-1-L.jpg\" alt=\"consular gate and statue\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Slow down as you pass the entrance arch. Admire the difference in stonework with the church walls. These stones come from the quarries at La Couronne, near Martigues. Simple and elegant, once again.<br\/>It is known as the Consular Gate.<br\/>Above is a statue sculpted by Jean Lenfant in 1616.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inside the church<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Eglise-Notre-Dame-Assomption\/i-qmf8TV2\/0\/17d908db\/L\/Eglise_notre_dame_assomption-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"Church interior with large pillars\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Once inside, notice the high structure:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>44 m long<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>25 m wide<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>22.5m high<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>The church has 3 naves but no transept. Take the time to realize the size of the pillars and the thickness of the walls, up to 2m.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The modern fresco<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Eglise-Notre-Dame-Assomption\/i-3SrCWMm\/0\/2ed54a98\/L\/Eglise_notre_dame_assomption-12-L.jpg\" alt=\"modern fresco\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The church&#8217;s interior remains fairly classical, but with a touch of modernity.<br\/>Gilbert Ganteaume, an artist from La Ciotat, painted a 3-panel fresco in 1975. It represents a free adaptation of the biblical journey and evokes the Liberation, then the Redemption and finally the Resurrection.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The organ<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Eglise-Notre-Dame-Assomption\/i-VnPMK24\/0\/5fcfde15\/L\/Eglise_notre_dame_assomption-6-L.jpg\" alt=\"organ\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The original organ from Les Accoules in Marseille. But it was replaced by this organ, built in 1877 by Polish-born Fran\u00e7ois Mader.<br\/>It has 3 sound levels and attractive woodwork decorations that blend perfectly with the rose window.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The choir<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Eglise-Notre-Dame-Assomption\/i-SspLPFD\/0\/6db2a367\/L\/Eglise_notre_dame_assomption-9-L.jpg\" alt=\"The choir and the statue of the Assumption\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>In the heart, you can see the high altar, which dates back to the 18th century and was created in Marseille.<br\/>The surrounding walnut woodwork dates from 1649.<br\/>But the most striking feature is the 3.15 m high statue above the stained-glass windows, depicting the Assumption with magnificent drapery movements.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Statues and paintings<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Eglise-Notre-Dame-Assomption\/i-nDks9rh\/0\/9368a0cd\/L\/Eglise_notre_dame_assomption-15-L.jpg\" alt=\"Notre Dame de Bon Voyage statues\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>And throughout the church, you can also see various statues in marble or other materials, as well as several paintings depicting, among others, St. Anthony, St. Francis, and Notre Dame de Bon Voyage.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Information about Christ de l&#8217;\u00cele-Verte<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/La-Ciotat\/n-tBbrxM\/Eglise-Notre-Dame-Assomption\/i-Zzh29nJ\/0\/a39c1113\/L\/Eglise_notre_dame_assomption-3-L.jpg\" alt=\"history of Christ de l'&#xCE;le-Verte\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Finally, discover the history of Christ de l&#8217;\u00cele-Verte.<br\/>By Jean Bologne, a pupil of Michelangelo. It was donated by Pope Pius VII in 1821 for installation on \u00cele-Verte opposite La Ciotat.<br\/>Christ disappeared during the bombardments of 1944, but was found by a diver during maritime mine clearance campaigns.
