In this article, we try to take you on a different journey, exploring the &#8220;secret&#8221; corners of the C\u00f4te d&#8217;Azur: village, beach, promenade, islands&#8230;<br\/>Read our tips for discovering the C\u00f4te d&#8217;Azur off the beaten track.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/provencelovers.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Hidden-gems-cote-Azur-secret-places-Off-the-beaten-path.jpeg\" alt=\"secret places on the cote azur off the beaten track\" class=\"wp-image-4216\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>This guide is completely <strong>independent<\/strong>, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hidden gems of the C\u00f4te d&#8217;Azur: the reality<\/h2>\n\n<p>The C\u00f4te d&#8217;Azur is a highly-developed and touristic region. As a result, you won&#8217;t find any undiscovered &#8220;secret&#8221; locations. There are people everywhere.<br\/>In this article, we share with you:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Places where we went in the middle of the day and didn&#8217;t see many tourists.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The places we were able to discover almost single-handedly by getting there before 10 a.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>We use the modern definition of the C\u00f4te d&#8217;Azur from Menton to Cassis.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. The village of Sainte-Agn\u00e8s<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Best-of\/n-PbwqvZ\/Villages\/i-Dm6H9jx\/0\/43762c9f\/L\/Sainte_Agnes_village_Vue-L.jpg\" alt=\"village of Sainte-Agn&#xE8;s with the mountains in the background\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Sainte-Agn\u00e8s is an unspoilt medieval village with narrow streets, stone houses and a timeless atmosphere. It&#8217;s known as Europe&#8217;s highest coastal village. It&#8217;s perched at an altitude of 800m, overlooking the sea!<br\/>Thanks to its strategic location, it has a long military history, with the ruins of a castle at the summit, and the Fort de Sainte-Agnes (part of the Maginot Line), built before the Second World War, which juts out into the rocky spur.<br\/>It has the &#8220;Les Plus Beaux Villages de France&#8221; label, and in our opinion is one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/provencelovers.fr\/en\/best-villages-cote-azur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most beautiful villages in the region<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>It lies in the hills behind the town of Menton.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. The city of La Ciotat<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Best-of\/n-PbwqvZ\/Villes\/i-FrwrrkL\/0\/da4dbd0c\/L\/La_ciotat-L.jpg\" alt=\"City of La Ciotat\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a city, so it&#8217;s always busy. We were also fascinated by the view of the sheer cliffs, offering a dramatic yet majestic setting.<br\/>Admittedly, it&#8217;s not a sandy beach, but we find it beautiful and much quieter: a place to rest and breathe. We enjoyed the serenity.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. L&#8217;\u00cele-Verte<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Best-of\/n-PbwqvZ\/Paysages\/i-DfJWbD8\/0\/64b58953\/L\/La_ciotat_ile_verte-L.jpg\" alt=\"View from &#xCE;le-Verte\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Some list the island of Porquerolles as one of the C\u00f4te d&#8217;Azur&#8217;s hidden gems. It&#8217;s indeed a jewel, but it&#8217;s also a very popular tourist destination in all seasons. The name may be less familiar to foreigners, but you&#8217;ll never be alone.<br\/>For a lesser-known island, we recommend \u00cele Verte at La Ciotat. The Villa Thuret garden<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Best-of\/n-PbwqvZ\/Jardins\/i-DH4N8tk\/0\/d7f87a1b\/L\/Jardin_Villa_Thuret-L.jpg\" alt=\"Villa Thuret garden with magnificent trees\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The C\u00f4te d&#8217;Azur harbors a number of botanical gems to delight the senses.  <br\/>One of the lesser-known gardens, more discreet in its beauty, is the Villa Thuret.<br\/>Unlike the other gardens, Villa Thruret is a scientific research site. The team has been working on acclimatization since 1857.<br\/>It&#8217;s a magnificent garden that&#8217;s a little less visually oriented for tourists, but allows you to discover some superb trees. Saint-Honorat Island<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Best-of\/n-PbwqvZ\/Jardins\/i-6RmSvcj\/0\/402dee06\/L\/ile_saint_honorat-1-L.jpg\" alt=\"Saint Honorat abbey and gardens\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The island of Saint-Honorat, a hidden treasure on the C\u00f4te d&#8217;Azur, is an ideal destination for lovers of nature and tranquillity.<br\/>From Cannes, many people visit the island of Sainte-Marguerite (which we also love), but not so many visit the second island behind it.<\/p>\n\n<p>On the garden island of Saint-Honorat, monks have for centuries perpetuated the art of caring for magnificent trees, vines and plants, creating a veritable haven of peace. Far from the hustle and bustle of the C\u00f4te d&#8217;Azur, the island of Saint-Honorat offers a quiet getaway where time seems to slow down. In addition to its peaceful beaches and secluded coves, the magnificent gardens surrounding the monastery add to its charm and invite contemplation and meditation.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Coastal path at Cap d&#8217;Antibes<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Antibes\/n-mKVLR5\/Cap-dAntibes\/i-s53CKLj\/0\/fb50f3dd\/L\/Antibes-capantibes-sentiertirepoil-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"Coastal path at Cap d'Antibes\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Locals will tell you that it&#8217;s not really off the beaten track. It&#8217;s true that they like to walk there.<br\/>But outside the summer or school vacations, it&#8217;s really very quiet.<br\/>In our opinion, this is one of the most beautiful walks on the C\u00f4te d&#8217;Azur.<br\/>We really enjoyed the rock formations and mountain views.<\/p>\n\n<p>South of Antibes.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8 \u00e0 10. Avoid the crowds before 10 a.m.: the most beautiful jewels at their quietest<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Village \u00c8ze before 10 a.m. or at night<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Best-of\/n-PbwqvZ\/Villages\/i-ZBP73Wr\/0\/2c45cefd\/L\/Eze_jardin_ruelles-L.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>\u00c8ze is the most popular village on the C\u00f4te d&#8217;Azur and even in Provence. So we had a preconceived notion when we went there. But he absolutely deserves his popularity. It&#8217;s exceptional!<br\/>Perched on a steep hill some 427 metres above the Mediterranean Sea, it offers spectacular views of the coast and sea. It&#8217;s a maze of narrow lanes and cobbled streets, typical of the Mediterranean region, with tunnels and arches. These arms of water in the heart of the cliffs really deserve their popularity.<br\/>We advise you to start your hike early, so that you can begin your return journey at 10 a.m. when people start arriving.
