It&#8217;s off for a day focused on the must-sees of this jewel of the C\u00f4te d&#8217;Azur!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9-10am: Promenade des Anglais and sundial<\/h3>\n\n<p>A must in Nice: a stroll along the Promenade des Anglais is a must! This promenade has run alongside the Baie des Anges since the early 19th century, stretching 7km along the Mediterranean coast. Designed by astronomer Bernard Milet in 1981, this sundial was installed on the day of the summer solstice, or longest day of the year. Belle \u00c9poque architecture, Italian influence, art deco buildings, you&#8217;re in for a treat. En route to discover the beauty of Nice&#8217;s avenues and buildings.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9h-9h30: cross Place Garibaldi<\/h3>\n\n<p>This square of yellow buildings, close to Vieux Nice, is a fine example of Nice&#8217;s Franco-Italian heritage. Place Garibaldi, built in the 18th century, pays homage to Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Italian republican and general born in Nice, who was behind the unification of Italy in the 19th century. In the center, you can see the stone statue of him with the ancient senate behind it. Today it&#8217;s one of the city&#8217;s central squares, where you&#8217;ll feel a warm, lively atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Nice\/n-wSXLpq\/Place-Garibaldi\/i-ZqW3xfq\/0\/086f06f8\/L\/place-garibaldi-nice-L.jpg\" alt=\"Place Garibaldi, Nice\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9:30-10:15: enjoy a panoramic view or simply admire the Tour Saint-Fran\u00e7ois<\/h3>\n\n<p>Just a 5-minute walk from the MAMAC Museum, the Tour Saint-Fran\u00e7ois rises 288 steps (yes, you read that right!). This is one of Nice&#8217;s highlights, revealing the city&#8217;s Italian influence. Built in the 13th century as a bell tower for the Franciscan convent, it is famous for its bell tower and clock.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Nice\/Monuments\/n-mXC7Dn\/Tour-Saint-Fran%C3%A7ois\/i-LpGF3tD\/0\/c23dbc39\/L\/tour-saint-franc%CC%A7ois-nice-L.jpg\" alt=\"Saint-Fran&#xE7;ois Tower in Nice\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>For the more courageous, you&#8217;ll have to climb almost 300 steps to reach the top, but the view is well worth the detour. Located in the old town near the Cour Saleya, it was built in the 17th century as a royal residence. When Nice became French in 1860, this sumptuous building became the Palais pr\u00e9fectoral. In the early 19th century, Nice architect Richard Scoffier redesigned the fa\u00e7ade and rebuilt the entrance hall and grand staircase. You can visit this building during the Heritage Days. It was closed to the public during our stay.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Nice\/n-wSXLpq\/Ville\/i-k82Br9R\/0\/648bcbe2\/L\/prefecture-nice-palais-ducs-de-savoie-L.jpg\" alt=\"Nice Prefectural Palace\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">11am-12.30pm: admire Belle \u00c9poque architecture in Nice<\/h3>\n\n<p>Belle \u00c9poque architecture in Nice is a legacy of the late 19th century. At the time, Nice was expanding rapidly to become a popular tourist destination for Europe&#8217;s aristocracy and bourgeoisie. An architectural development movement ensued, to the delight of our eyes!<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the Promenade des Anglais, an emblematic stroll along the Baie des Anges since the early 19th century. From Nice C\u00f4te d&#8217;Azur airport to Quai des \u00c9tats-Unis, this promenade stretches 7km along Nice&#8217;s Mediterranean coast, lined with palm trees and Belle \u00c9poque buildings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Nice\/n-wSXLpq\/Promenade-des-Anglais\/i-s6f2gbm\/0\/99c95c83\/L\/Nice_promenade_anglais_coucher_soleil-1-L.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Nice Opera House, rebuilt in 1885 by Nice architect Fran\u00e7ois Aune, a pupil of Gustave Eiffel. We were charmed by the calm and serenity of this church in Vieux Nice, also known as \u00c9glise de l&#8217;Annonciation. The facade of the monument is rather sober, while the interior is adorned with several paintings and moldings, which we took the time to discover. We felt very small in front of this imposing stone building that has stood the test of time. This fort dominates the entire C\u00f4te d&#8217;Azur. The panorama from the monument&#8217;s terrace really dazzled us.
