The H\u00f4tel Le Negresco, which opened in 1913, is the city&#8217;s most famous landmark, with its pink dome and collection of nearly 6,000 works of art. The Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations, known as MUCEM, complements this heritage with contemporary architecture designed by Rudy Ricciotti that engages in a dialogue with the neighboring Fort Saint-Jean.  <br\/>You&#8217;ll still find some beautiful art museums there: the Palais Longchamp is home to the Museum of Fine Arts, which houses works by Rubens, David, and Ingres.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Marseille\/Mus%C3%A9es\/n-8DPVDX\/MUCEM\/i-GC8fjMd\/0\/LvKnfSNppWq28n3bv9sCCJnt6zQFQ9BL9VdnWpthX\/L\/architecture%20mucem%20marseille-L.jpg\" alt=\"Architecture of the MUCEM in Marseille\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Museums in Nice<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nice is a city with a wealth of museums, especially art museums, as the region has been a great source of inspiration for artists. The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMAC) displays works by Niki de Saint Phalle and Yves Klein from a terrace offering a 360-degree view of the city.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Matisse Museum, located in the Villa des Ar\u00e8nes in Cimiez, traces the career of the artist, who made Nice his source of inspiration beginning in 1917. We were also impressed by Old Nice, where the 17th-century Sainte-R\u00e9parate Cathedral stands next to the Saint-Fran\u00e7ois Tower and its 288 steps. Marseille makes up for this with sites that have a strong architectural character, such as the MUCEM and the Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica. We have a slight preference for<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Atmosphere and Identity of the Two Cities<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Atmosphere in Marseille<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marseille has a working-class character that can sometimes take travelers accustomed to more polished cities by surprise. Around the Old Port, there\u2019s always a lively atmosphere among the pleasure boats, trawlers, and caf\u00e9 terraces. We appreciated that raw energy, unique to a city that exists first and foremost for its residents.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Panier neighborhood, with its cobblestone streets adorned with street art, carries on this working-class and artistic spirit. We enjoyed getting lost there, among artists&#8217; studios and colorful facades, far from the well-trodden paths.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Marseille\/n-tLxzpP\/Quartier-du-Panier\/i-Nzrkn5x\/0\/NdRNgnPccVWbBvZnMFt268d6XK3LB38wV6wbCdvbB\/L\/graphitti%20quartier%20panier%20marseille-L.jpg\" alt=\"Street Art in the Panier Neighborhood of Marseille\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Atmosphere in Nice<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nice has a more relaxed atmosphere, a legacy of its past as a resort destination for the European aristocracy in the 19th century. The Promenade des Anglais, lined with palm trees, embodies an elegance that transcends the ages without losing its character. At all hours of the day, we came across runners enjoying the view of the sea, which gives the city a pace that is both relaxed and lively.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Old Nice, with its narrow streets and the Cours Saleya market, provides a livelier, more Mediterranean contrast to this polished image.
