The <strong>Palais des Papes<\/strong>, which served as the papal residence for nearly 70 years, remains one of the largest Gothic palaces in the world: it consists of the austere Old Palace, built under Benedict XII, and the more refined New Palace, constructed under Clement VI.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Avignon\/n-PS9kD6\/Ville\/i-hsFBJ6n\/0\/NV6sqTTBSVcTBbktmgnt78QQzRLQQFCFQw9hJ4NJ7\/L\/provence-avignon-pont-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"Avignon bridge\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Saint-B\u00e9n\u00e9zet Bridge<\/strong>, better known as the Avignon Bridge, dates from the 12th century; today, only four of its original twenty-two arches remain.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Notre-Dame des Doms Cathedral<\/strong>, also founded in the 12th century, stands next to the palace and houses the tomb of Pope John XXII.
