We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n Yes, the village of Gassin is worth a visit. We loved the exceptional view of the entire peninsula. Its cobblestone streets and stone houses adorned with bougainvillea make it a must-see destination in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.<\/p>\n\n It is one of the “Most Beautiful Villages of France,” a designation that recognizes its well-preserved medieval heritage and the authenticity of its historic center. Gassin owes its nickname, \u201cGuardia Sinus\u201d (Guardian of the Gulf), to its perched location. We began our tour by strolling through the cobblestone alleys lined with stone houses, in the shade of the century-old hackberry trees that frame the small squares. <\/p>\n\n The village has preserved its “barris,” those ancient Proven\u00e7al ramparts, remnants of which can still be seen on some of the facades. You\u2019ll also come across Rue de la Tasco and the tower of the medieval castle, which date back to the first recorded mentions of the village in 1190 or 1234. The stroll is an easy one, winding past craft shops and flower-adorned facades.<\/p>\n\n See our tips<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n Gassin is, above all, about the view. From the panoramic terrace of the Tourist Office, we enjoyed what many consider to be the most beautiful view of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, the Maures Mountains, the vineyards, and\u2014on a clear day\u2014all the way to the Bay of Cannes and the snow-capped Alps in winter. <\/p>\n\n The orientation table at Place de\u00ef Barri offers a view of Cavalaire Bay and the \u00celes d’Or. You’ll also find a beautiful viewpoint near the Notre-Dame-de-la-Consolation Chapel, with a view of the islands and the Maures Mountains. Finally, the Barri de Gassin, near the Moulins de Paillas, offers a view of Pampelonne Bay.<\/p>\n\n Built in 1558 and consecrated in 1582, the Church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption stands at the northern entrance to the village. We noticed that it was built directly on the rocks, supported by massive buttresses. Its architecture remains simple: a choir, a rectangular nave with two bays of vaults, a three-sided apse, and a square bell tower that lost its battlements during the Revolution. <\/p>\n\n The basalt door on the east facade is topped by a triangular pediment and an 18th-century plaster cross. Inside, you’ll find a 16th-century white marble holy water font, stained-glass windows by Claude Baillon, and a Stations of the Cross created by Roger Roux in 1968.<\/p>\n\n All the photos, maps, information, good addresses to make your stay in Provence<\/strong> a success, will soon be gathered<\/strong> in a single ebook!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n The entrance to this secret garden is located on Place de\u00ef Barri, across from the restaurant La Casettina. We went down a few steps and passed through a wrought-iron gate to discover a 2,500-square-meter area laid out in four terraces. Acquired in 1973 by Germaine L’Hardy-Denonain, the garden is home to several hundred Proven\u00e7al and Mediterranean species, grown without pesticides or chemicals. <\/p>\n\n The Porte des Sarrasins marks the entrance to the medieval fort of Gassin, a reminder of the Moors’ occupation of the village until the 10th century. We liked the simplicity of this stone entrance, which has remained true to its original defensive purpose. <\/p>\n\n You’ll find it as you stroll through the historic center, not far from the church and the village’s main squares. Like the remnants of ramparts scattered throughout the town, it bears witness to the fortified past of this ancient hilltop town.<\/p>\n\n To the west of the village, between Rue du Moulin \u00e0 huile and Rue des Fabriques, lies the Androuno. We found it at its narrowest point, 29 centimeters wide\u2014just wide enough for one person to pass through at a time. The term, derived from the Latin “andron,” referred to a passageway between two houses in ancient Greece. <\/p>\n\n This alley, which is covered in places, once offered protection from the mistral, the heat wave, and rain showers. Recognized by National Geographic as the narrowest in the world, it remains a sight you won’t want to miss as you stroll through the old town.<\/p>\n\n Spending the night in the old village lets you enjoy Gassin once the day-trippers have left. We recommend the H\u00f4tel Bello Visto, located right in the center on Place de\u00ef Barri: its seven rooms and terrace offer breathtaking views of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and the Maures countryside. <\/p>\n\n In the immediate vicinity of the village, more prestigious accommodations such as the H\u00f4tel Villa Belrose and the Mas de Chastelas round out the options for a stay in a refined Proven\u00e7al setting. When you wake up, you’ll love the way the light falls on the village rooftops. We came across the Bello Visto Restaurant on Place de\u00ef Barri, in the shade of the hackberry trees, renowned for its Proven\u00e7al specialties and its panoramic terrace. <\/p>\n\n La Verdoyante, run by the same family since 1979, offers refined southern cuisine on a hillside overlooking the vineyards and the gulf. Au Vieux Gassin, located in the heart of the village since 2001, serves Proven\u00e7al cuisine on a large, shaded terrace. You’ll also find more casual spots, like pizzerias and caf\u00e9s, for a quick bite between sightseeing stops.<\/p>\n\n Gassin is also a popular starting point for hiking. We followed the trail leading to the Col de Collebasse, then on to the Moulins de Paillas and the village of Ramatuelle, with long stretches along the ridge offering panoramic views from the \u00celes d\u2019Or to the Mercantour, and a walk through a beautiful cork oak forest near the Barri de Gassin.<\/p>\n\n Other, longer loops connect the coast, the Proven\u00e7al countryside, and the ridges all the way to Croix-Valmer. You can also choose to go mountain biking, with several marked loops starting from the village. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes, as most of the trails alternate between forest paths and sections along roads.<\/p>\n\n The town of Gassin extends well beyond its hilltop village, nestled among vineyards, beaches, and recreational activities. Here are a few ideas to round out your visit.<\/p>\n\n Gassin is also surrounded by vineyards. Some of them are open to visitors. This fine-sand beach, shared with the town of Saint-Tropez, faces the Maures Mountains and offers one of the best views of the gulf at sunset. It combines private facilities with a public beach, offering free showers and restrooms, as well as a lifeguard station during the summer. It’s also a great spot for windsurfing when the mistral is blowing.<\/p>\n\n Located at the Foux intersection, Azur Park is a nighttime amusement park with more than 35 attractions spread across 6.5 hectares: a Ferris wheel, a ghost train, a tree-top adventure course, and two prehistoric-themed mini-golf courses. The park is open from April through September.<\/p>\n\n From the A8 highway, the Le Muy\/Sainte-Maxime exit is the most convenient way to get to Gassin. The route is easy. Gassin offers approximately 400 free parking spaces in the old village and the surrounding area, particularly around the Tourist Office: Place L\u00e9on Martel, Place Charles Giordano, and Place Louis Collomp. The P1 parking lot, located about 350 meters from the Tourist Office, is right on the edge of the medieval village and offers a view of the Maures Mountains and the Gassin plain.<\/p>\n\n Plan on spending half a day exploring the historic center, the church, and the botanical garden, or a full day if you include a visit to a winery and a hike. Spring and fall are less crowded than the height of summer, when the Saint-Tropez peninsula is very popular.<\/p>\n\n We recommend starting at the Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Church at the northern entrance to the village, then strolling toward the central squares, the botanical garden, and the Androuno. The streets are paved and sometimes sloped, but this poses no major difficulty for exploring on foot.<\/p>\n\n Gassin is a great place to visit with the family. Children will have fun trying to find the narrowest point of the Androuno and exploring the terraces of the botanical garden.
