You&#8217;ll appreciate the tranquility of the site, which allows you to take your time observing the chapels, stone decorations and works of art that have been preserved for centuries. Its classic 17th\u1d49 century fa\u00e7ade, Proven\u00e7al Romanesque bell tower and side chapels make it an interesting monument. It&#8217;s within easy reach of most of Toulon&#8217;s attractions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>By bus<\/strong>: several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reseaumistral.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">R\u00e9seau Mistral<\/a> lines serve the surrounding area. You can get off at the &#8220;Cours Lafayette&#8221; or &#8220;Porte d&#8217;Italie&#8221; stops, about a 5-minute walk from the cathedral.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>By ferry<\/strong>: if you&#8217;re arriving from La Seyne, Les Sablettes or Saint-Mandrier, the maritime pier is less than a 10-minute walk away.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>By car:<\/strong> Toulon is easily accessible via the A57 and A50 motorways. Note, however, that the city center has several pedestrian zones, and the area around the cathedral is not accessible by car. It is a perfect example of the classic Provencal style of the late 17th\u1d49 century, with its sober lines, triangular pediment and regular architectural order around the portal. Although the cathedral is not imposing in terms of height, its facade stands out for its width and the regularity of its proportions. It&#8217;s an architectural face that tells the story of an important period in Toulon&#8217;s history, when the city, still tightly knit around its port, modernized some of its religious buildings to adapt them to the tastes of the XVII\u1d49 century.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bell tower and history<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Toulon\/n-LqGH9W\/Cathedrale-toulon\/i-b769LcH\/0\/MRGSJ4QvKsX5X432RVqTftbCMwJNg6BFHcQCnc7TK\/L\/cathedrale%20toulon-03-L.jpg\" alt=\"Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-la-Seds, Toulon: bell tower\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bell tower, rebuilt in 1737, is one of the most important elements in understanding the cathedral&#8217;s evolution over the centuries. We have learned that it is the successor to several earlier structures, and bears witness to a phase of building expansion as Toulon grew around its arsenal and became a major Mediterranean military port. You&#8217;ll notice that its architecture is also relatively restrained, but perfectly in keeping with the cathedral&#8217;s overall style.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Toulon\/n-LqGH9W\/Cathedrale-toulon\/i-XKzbhxM\/0\/L2dXVqgKjx9fvgTRxXXGfmXhFfJ8drdh4cdgwH54K\/L\/cathedrale%20toulon-06-L.jpg\" alt=\"Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-la-Seds, Toulon: exterior\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the square, you can admire its massive silhouette and regular masonry, typical of the Provencal aesthetic of the XVIII\u1d49 century. Today, it houses the diocesan bells and still marks the landscape of the city&#8217;s historic heart. This bell tower also evokes the resilient dimension of the building, which underwent several phases of work and consolidation, particularly after the bombardments that hit Toulon in the XX\u1d49 century. The original Romanesque building was extended from the XVII\u1d49 century onwards. Then the chapels were remodeled in the XVIII\u1d49 century and additional volumes were added, to accommodate more worshippers. Some of the chapels added in the XVII\u1d49 century have been modified over time, but they still preserve an organization typical of modern-day Provencal churches. This architectural evolution reflects the very history of Toulon: a city that grew, fortified and transformed itself, while preserving elements inherited from its medieval past.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interiors and treasures to discover<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nave and side aisles<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Toulon\/n-LqGH9W\/Cathedrale-toulon\/i-ksMMg4V\/0\/L6SNf4H79BWcLQwqvJF5zbVv93C8b4RKVJ9QLskvJ\/L\/cathedrale%20toulon-09-L.jpg\" alt=\"Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-la-Seds, Toulon: interior\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you enter the cathedral, you&#8217;ll discover a nave whose appearance is the result of centuries of transformations. The space is vast, punctuated by pillars that bear witness to the different phases of construction. The original Romanesque building forms the core of this space, but the restorations and extensions of the XVII\u1d49 century have given it its current proportions. The soft light inside enhances the Claire stonework and simple volumes typical of old Provencal buildings.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Toulon\/n-LqGH9W\/Cathedrale-toulon\/i-gTv8pbb\/0\/KGwJp79fwMBsBNj6P75xLkSwVq8B3vHr3gtQX958N\/L\/cathedrale%20toulon-11-L.jpg\" alt=\"Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-la-Seds, Toulon: chapel\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The side aisles, added or modified in later extensions, create a flowing path along the sides of the nave. These spaces are punctuated by chapels housing altarpieces, statues and decorative elements linked to worship. The whole may seem sober compared to some of the more monumental cathedrals. Keep in mind that this sobriety is part of the identity of Notre-Dame-de-la-Seds: a building shaped by continuity rather than stylistic rupture.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The side chapels<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Toulon\/n-LqGH9W\/Cathedrale-toulon\/i-NSkwMKw\/0\/KVd9CSqrHf8PhNn4P9Vh4VdbrG5L8z9bTrswz42rz\/L\/cathedrale%20toulon-31-L.jpg\" alt=\"Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-la-Seds, Toulon: side chapel\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you walk through the nave, you&#8217;ll discover several side chapels that bear witness to the cathedral&#8217;s spiritual and artistic wealth. They form a varied ensemble, combining episcopal memorabilia, Baroque masterpieces and traces of Toulon&#8217;s religious history. At the entrance to the north aisle, the Chapelle du Purgatoire houses the tombs of the bishops of Toulon. It&#8217;s a sober space, charged with memory, that recalls the turbulent evolution of the diocese.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Toulon\/n-LqGH9W\/Cathedrale-toulon\/i-SpGqT2c\/0\/KVHF88p4VRMFNLMCSTwjx2LZCP76nG3sp4tKs69D2\/L\/cathedrale%20toulon-20-L.jpg\" alt=\"Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-la-Seds, Toulon: artwork  \"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Continuing our visit, we came across the Chapelle Sainte-Anne, which catches the eye with a major work by Pierre Puget, L&#8217;Apparition de la Vierge \u00e0 F\u00e9lix de Cantalice (circa 1651). Opposite is the Chapelle Saint-Cyprien, a tribute to the great figures of Toulon&#8217;s church. You&#8217;ll see the relics of Saint Cyprian, fourth bishop of Toulon (524-549), surrounded by his teachers and disciples.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Toulon\/n-LqGH9W\/Cathedrale-toulon\/i-KvRG54B\/0\/MBv7TCkfstz57KMvnKSgSC7PGcPfL7ChV7wKMNZjn\/L\/cathedrale%20toulon-37-L.jpg\" alt=\"Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-la-Seds, Toulon: relics\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t miss the Chapelle de la Vierge. Several elements were installed in the XVII\u1d49 and XVIII\u1d49 centuries, including altarpieces and sculpted pieces typical of Provencal religious art. We enjoyed admiring the organ in the nave.
