Since 1963, the site has been dedicated to the work of the author of the great gouaches. Located in the villa des ar\u00e8nes on the Colline de Cimiez, it houses a magnificent collection of works by Henri Matisse and plays a key role in Nice&#8217;s vibrant cultural life. The most memorable part of our visit, and well worth the detour:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the artist&#8217;s emblematic creations, such as the statue <em>Le Serf<\/em> and the painting <em>La Temp\u00eate in Nice<\/em>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>L&#8217;arbre de vie<\/em> stained glass window with ultramarine blue, bottle green and lemon yellow glass, considered one of Nice&#8217;s artistic treasures,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Blue Nude IV<\/em>, one of our favorites, a large azure gouache cut-out and pasted on canvas, taken from a set of 4 gouache cut-out compositions, the <em>Blue Nudes<\/em> series.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s one of the city&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/provencelovers.fr\/en\/museums-nice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most beautiful museums<\/a> and one of <a href=\"https:\/\/provencelovers.fr\/en\/best-things-do-nice-france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nice&#8217;s best activities<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Nice\/Mus&#xE9;es\/n-hb4qTV\/Mus&#xE9;e-Matisse\/i-vXLD7K4\/2\/MxQpDP3QNj9jkHKV8JmjVHcSgL93q2kLr4zcfHtRH\/L\/musee-matisse-nice-4-L.jpg\" alt=\"Matisse Museum in Nice\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you can see<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The <em>L&#8217;arbre de vie<\/em> stained glass window, our favorite<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Nice\/Mus&#xE9;es\/n-hb4qTV\/Mus&#xE9;e-Matisse\/i-2PmvTTT\/2\/KJDSRH4JwZw83XqGw8qq842nLc9Zjmh3M5nMPVdWK\/L\/musee-matisse-nice-1-L.jpg\" alt=\"The Tree of Life stained glass window\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <em>L&#8217;arbre de vie<\/em> stained glass window is one of our real favorites among Henri Matisse&#8217;s works. Its ultramarine blue, bottle green and lemon yellow glasses won us over. Did you know that this marvel was one of the test pieces for the stained glass windows in the Chapelle des Dominicaines du Rosaire in Vence, a 40-minute drive from Nice? Considered one of the city&#8217;s artistic treasures, this stained glass window is a feat of engineering. As you get closer, you&#8217;ll notice that the ultramarine blue and bottle-green zones are transparent, allowing you to see the landscape through. As here on the left, we admired the models for the pink calyx veil and the pink purse. Both on gouache paper, cut, pasted and mounted on canvas.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Nice\/Mus&#xE9;es\/n-hb4qTV\/Mus&#xE9;e-Matisse\/i-3mtwh4r\/0\/LJF38xdP26bgq563S9GHc8TFnDRNvfzw5CdPKgW3Q\/L\/musee-matisse-nice-1-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"model\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Henri Matisse was not only a complete artist, he also carried out a great deal of research before embarking on certain creations. Above, still in this space, we appreciated the model of the pavement for the Chapelle de Vence, a veritable culmination of Matisse&#8217;s plastic and artistic research. We learned that he had designed the Chapelle du Rosaire in Vence (just a 40-minute drive from Nice) alongside architect Auguste Perret and Soeur Jacques-Marie. This chapel was built for the Dominican Convent between 1948 and 1951.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Les Odalisques, or the harem by Henri Matisse<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Nice\/Mus&#xE9;es\/n-hb4qTV\/Mus&#xE9;e-Matisse\/i-CJN4WpR\/0\/LXVpZTDFLGbcKBkXxcX77mnntRtH9f6Q6PJFLSmLr\/L\/musee-matisse-nice-odalisque-1-L.jpg\" alt=\"Odalisques by Matisse\" style=\"width:702px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s continue our stroll through the works of this genius of Fauvism and discover one of his key creations: the collection of Odalisques from the 1920s. The artist illustrated several nude models, dressed in Oriental-style harem costumes. This series is quite mythical, highly visual and inspired in particular by a modern Orient depicted in films shot in Nice at the time.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Nice\/Mus&#xE9;es\/n-hb4qTV\/Mus&#xE9;e-Matisse\/i-hpr9bLk\/0\/NKFtF9FcWDQPqfhrjLZkFzRz3fwx43D6zSNdbHG6V\/L\/musee-matisse-nice-odalisque-L.jpg\" alt=\"Odalisques by Matisse\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through these various exotic characters, we&#8217;ve captured the codes and details that nourish the erotic imagination conveyed by Matisse. Contemplating the women depicted on these canvases, we were faced with veritable icons. The latter was inspired by Matisse&#8217;s harem to create his colorful and sparkling <em>Sunset nudes<\/em> series. Above, <em>Man ray at the dance<\/em> intrigued us because it combines Matisse&#8217;s <em>La Danse<\/em> with the female nude. A form of mise en abyme of the works, a practice he regularly employs in his work.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Nice\/Mus&#xE9;es\/n-hb4qTV\/Mus&#xE9;e-Matisse\/i-5B3kRGq\/0\/KbTnX7mTKJ7bQNcj73DcfVzrhbjBS67XQp7M5trLg\/L\/musee-matisse-nice-wesselman-1-L.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;Sunset nudes&quot;: Tom Wesselman's tribute to Matisse\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Odalisques are revisited to take on color and move at the tip of Tom Wesselman&#8217;s brush on these numerous canvases of oil paint.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The mythical <em>Blue Nude IV<\/em><\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Nice\/Mus&#xE9;es\/n-hb4qTV\/Mus&#xE9;e-Matisse\/i-cqBg8zn\/2\/L4nmgs9JtCSMPwvH9WsGGfBxbZpVwhvLDdkWBvPMS\/L\/musee-matisse-nice-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;Blue Nude IV&quot; by Henri Matisse\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the collection progressed, we rediscovered the diversity of Henri Matisse&#8217;s works, each more inspiring than the last. One of our favorites: <em>Nu bleu IV<\/em>, a large azure gouache cut and pasted on canvas. This is an &#8220;extract&#8221; from the <em>Blue Nudes<\/em> series of 4 gouache cut-outs.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From drawing to bronze sculpture<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Nice\/Mus&#xE9;es\/n-hb4qTV\/Mus&#xE9;e-Matisse\/i-GB8bWwP\/0\/Ls2cVnHssxdXMrWqMSh7k42N2S46WNVvPXSNtdQPk\/L\/musee-matisse-nice-bronze-L.jpg\" alt=\"drawings and sculptures\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We really enjoyed this museum, which houses a vast collection of Henri Matisse&#8217;s creations. From sketches and paintings to sculptures and drawings, you&#8217;ll see that he was a truly all-round artist!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The <em>red Moucharabieh<\/em>, centerpiece of her textile collection<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Nice\/Mus&#xE9;es\/n-hb4qTV\/Mus&#xE9;e-Matisse\/i-7QMczGw\/0\/MbbWTJn3dZN5fnsTzZGRZQ6gVdDPTn9KfkzPH4GMH\/L\/musee-matisse-nice-moucharabieh-L.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;Moucharabieh rouge&quot; by Henri Matisse\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Did you know that Henri Matisse also created a textile collection? The perfect complement to his broad artistic palette! One of the highlights of his textile collection is the <em>red Moucharabieh<\/em>, which left us speechless. We found influences from North Africa, India and Turkey in the artist&#8217;s work. Matisse wove and hung these fabrics on walls or in front of windows to filter the Mediterranean light. We find his signature strong energy, arching rhythm and radiant motifs!<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Objects and furniture: the artist&#8217;s personal collection<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Nice\/Mus&#xE9;es\/n-hb4qTV\/Mus&#xE9;e-Matisse\/i-MPjvdrP\/0\/MqJncrQXKLhFjzRj3pnSRMcDVFwJHggbMTdhj4f7N\/L\/musee-matisse-nice-6-L.jpg\" alt=\"Objects and furniture: the personal collection of the artist Matisse\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Henri Matisse was a virtuoso and a great collector of antique objects and furniture. Vase, fruit bowl, cheese cloche and its earthenware plate, glass bottle, marble and wrought-iron table&#8230; We were lucky enough to discover several pieces from his personal collection, bequeathed to the city of Nice by his heirs.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The &#8220;Claire Room&#8221; and its wall drawings<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Nice\/Mus&#xE9;es\/n-hb4qTV\/Mus&#xE9;e-Matisse\/i-GT7NPSJ\/0\/Ltsv3CKsxVBdkksLqcD6jDng2z7tzjB9hsW6RMrBT\/L\/musee-matisse-nice-1-3-L.jpg\" alt=\"The &quot;Claire Room&quot; and its wall drawings\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you know the story of the &#8220;Chambre Claire&#8221;? In December 1917, Henri Matisse arrived in Nice. He rented several rooms in various large hotels with sea views, where he painted his first canvases inspired by Nice. In 1938, he finally bought an apartment in the former Hotel Le R\u00e9gina, now the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/fr\/excelsiornice.html?aid=2319618\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Hotel Excelsior Regina Palace<\/a>, which had welcomed Queen Victoria at the end of the <sup>19th<\/sup> century. The large-format archive images and Henri Matisse&#8217;s drawings on display in this room of the museum allowed us to enter the brightly-lit room where the artist exhibited his sketches.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An interactive, educational museum<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Provence-Lovers\/Nice\/Mus&#xE9;es\/n-hb4qTV\/Mus&#xE9;e-Matisse\/i-qfsGPd4\/0\/LbmxPrrDgbCNzVJw79kCwXWBvfvbj542gvjjtzKGp\/L\/musee-matisse-nice-ecran-L.jpg\" alt=\"interactive and educational museum\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Henri Matisse Museum in Nice is one of our favorites because it&#8217;s so interactive and educational. We took advantage of the screens showing archive images and short reports.
